I'm going to Vancouver during the summer with my wife and son. Just wondering what people think are the best places to see and things to do in Vancouver. We only have a few days so I'd like to hit some of the must soo places.
So far we intendt to go to Gas Town and the wife wants to do some shopping on Robson.
Any advice from people in the know would be appreciated. |

I like grouse mountain skyride, Lynn canyon suspension bridge, really like stanley park and the zoo but I think most of the zoo is gone now, granville island is nice. Not much in gas town and if you go one block in the wrong direction yikes-meth heads every few feet.
Beaches are nice in summer- I Like Kits beach. Go to a sushi place for lunch -last time I was back they had incredible places for 14.95 all you could eat.
Rent a car and drive the sea to sky highway to whistler for a day and just enjoy the awesome beauty of B.C. |

I lived in Vancouver for a year and still miss it terribly. The Vancouver Aquarium in Stanley Park is always fun. As well as the Art Gallery. There's also The Fish House for a meal. English Bay can be fun but it's changed a lot since 2000. There are tons of Korean restaurants near Denman and Robson.
Horseshoe Bay is quiet and peaceful. Hmm.. You can also take the ferry over to Victoria to see the Butchart Gardens. |

You definitely want to hit Granville Island on a sunny day. Wonderful shops, lively market atmosphere and plenty of things to see such as street performers, live comedy, and a magic store and top-notch water park for your son!
If you're up to traveling a bit, take the skytrain for a pleasant ride, maybe to Metrotown Center Mall (gigantic). Lonsdale or Westminster Quay are also quaint waterside market destinations.
Make sure you visit Chinatown for arguably the best dim sum in the world.
Also, if you coordinate properly, you can probably catch a decent afternoon activity or two for your son at the eemain branch of the public library.
Hope this helps and enjoy your trip! |

If you are going when there isn't slow left on the mountain, doing the "Grouse Grind" hike up Grouse mountain is exhilarating (if you like hiking). If not, take the lift up and have a nice micro-brew and delicious meal at the top, then enjoy the view of the entire city (if you are lucky enough to go on a nice, clear day).
You can go to Granville Island or the Lonsdale Quay public market for a look around. I suggest taking the sea-bus to the Lonsdale Quay first, then take the bus which goes up to the Capilano suspension bridge. Enjoy a Nanaimo bar as a treat for bravely crossing the bridge...
If you like good food, but like it cheap, check out commercial drive. I used to live there. Tons of excellent, affordable restaurants, especially around 1st and commercial. It's an easy street to walk down... just get off at the Broadway skytrain station.
Definitely see Stanley park... do a bike ride around it. It's all newly paved, and you can rent bikes nearby (just internet search)...
Stop at the beach (English Bay) before you do the trudge up Robson street. Robson is sort of divided into two parts: The Asian part (Korean and Japanese restaurants / bars) and the shopping part. Both interesting...
Definitely check out China town, and like another poster said, get the Dim Sum. It's only available until about 2pm, so try to get it for brunch, breakfast, lunch... whatever.
Gastown is OK, but touristy, historical, I like it, but yeah, don't stray too far into the East Hastings (meth-head territory) area.
Metrotown has awesome shopping. Go there! Take the skytrain, it's the best mall in BC.
Also, check out 4th ave. in Kitsilano. Excellent shopping & restaurants, and overall good, classy part of town. A beach is nearby which you can enjoy...
Damn, writing this is making me miss Vancouver. LOVE that place |

More great info. Thanks.
Just wondering if anyone has been to the Tea House or Seqoia Grill in Stanley Park. They seem like they have a fantastic location. I was thinking of bringing the wife there four our anniversary.
Also wondering what a good dim sum place might be or if anyone knows of a good fish and chips joint downtown...the wife has a craving. |

Lots of good advice from previous posters on places to visit while in Vancouver.
As for the Tea House, it's a good choice for a place to celebrate a special occasion. It offers a partial, though very nice view of English Bay. The type of food on the menu is decidedly "westcoast", and their chef does a reasonably good job incorporating seasonal ingredients into the menu items.
Re. dim sum restaurants: I would place Sun Sui Wah at the top of my list, followed by Kirin. Sun Sui Wah is about a 20-25 minute bus ride from downtown, but well worth the trip. It's racked up many local and international awards over the last few years , all for good reason. Kirin is conveniently located in downtown Vancouver. The quality and consistency is very good at both these places, but Sun Sui Wah does everything a little bit better.
Keep in mind that both these restaurants offer a la carte menus, where you're given a sheet of paper listing all the menu items, and you place a check mark beside the items you want.
Alternatively, if you're looking for a dim sum place where servers are constantly cruising around the restaurant with trolleys loaded with various food items, then you may want to consider Floata in Chinatown, or Dai Tung (about 15-20 minute bus ride from downtown).
Enjoy your visit. It's a beautiful city. |
