I'm arriving late the night before I'm expected to start teaching. I have no idea what to expect on my first day. They put that I'd have a few days to shadow the old teacher in the contract, but that just isn't happening at this point obviously.

Also I'm a bit concerned that I'll be utterly exhausted on the first day of work, but they are inflexible about pushing the start date back even 1 business day.

Any help would be appreciated.

Bring a big bag of Kimchi to give out to all the kids and teachers.

You'll walk into a classroom with a Korean English co-teacher. They will try to stimulate your students to ask you questions this will be greeted with blank looks and silence. You'll get the odd kid asking you if you like Kimchi or are you married.

These days I usually skip this awequard stage I go straight into Power points with basic Wh questions and cool pictures of Korean things kids recognize.

You won't be really expected to teach on the first day. Whatever you do don't throw around a ball. As the school trouble maker will just ping it into the side of a kids head and they will fumble it always and you won't get any real dialogues. The first day is also a good time to give out rules and lay down the law. I find those"feel good" first days to be a complete waste of time.

They might ask how tall you are, which I find strange because can't they just look at you and see if you're tall or not? Learn your height in cm because they won't get "feet".

Yes, ppt with basic "wh" questions is good.

You could also talk about some features of school life in your country and together, make "but" contrasting statements with school life in Korea. Talk about uniforms (or lack thereof), school lunch, afterschool activities.
