|
|
I've read a lot about how you can request that your CRC from the FBI be apostilled, like this (from the FBI FAQ):
Quote: |
9. Does the FBI provide apostilles*?
(*An apostille is a certification that a document that has been legalized or authenticated by the issuing agency through a process in which various seals are placed on the document.)
The CJIS Division will authenticate U.S. Department of Justice Order 556-73 fingerprint search results for international requests by placing the FBI seal and the signature of a division official on the results if requested at the time of submission. Documents prepared in this way may then be sent to the U.S. Department of State by the requester to obtain an apostille if necessary. This procedure became effective on January 25, 2010 and will apply only to documents finalized after that date. Requests to authenticate previously processed results will not be accepted. This procedure replaces the letter formerly provided by the CJIS Division that indicated the service was not provided. The apostille service is not provided to individuals requesting search results for Canadian immigration, as it is not required for this purpose. |
However, it doesn't say anything on exactly how to go about this. I'm looking at the application on this website (http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/background-checks/background_checks), and it has no mention of how to request an apostille.
Also, another question: The place that took my fingerprints was kind of retarded. They got some of my info wrong, like they didn't put my correct address on my fingerprint sheet (they left out the address number). Can I correct this myself with a pen? |

Read the sentence directly after the one you've highlighted. The answer is there. In the event that you choose to send your CRC to the Department of State, or are required to because your home state will not apostille an FBI background check, visit the Department of State's Authentications web site.
I have no answer for your second question. However, it would seem that if information were incorrectly excised from your form the logical thing would be to add the information in question. [/b] |

Yeah, but the way that it's worded led me to believe that I had to request the apostille with the FBI CRC request.
Just to be sure:
So I request the FBI CRC as described in my original link. Then, I just get whatever they send me back apostillized, either at my state's Secretary of State or the Department of State office. |

The FBI will not apostille and will not forward your CRC to the DOS to be apostilled. You'll have to do that yourself when it comes back. Figure out if your state will apostille the federal document or if you have to send it to the federal DOS. There's a thread around here for that, or call your state DOS.
As for your second question, fill out correctly as much info on the fingerprint cards as possible. You don't want it coming back saying it didn't have enough information for the records check to be completed . |

If you're taking the federal apostille route, make sure to request a seal and signature with the FBI check to obtain the apostille. If you're taking the state apostille route, follow your state's SOS directions.
Best of luck. |

We created a comprehensive guide to obtaining your FBI CBC and have posted it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?8fzv000w1v850nt
We followed all of the steps listed and received our CBC and notarized diploma in just under 3 months. Korean Immigration even thanked us for having all of our documents prepared to their specifications. Good luck! |

When I sent my CBC to the FBI I didn't specify anything about authentication or whatever, will I get a signed authenticated version in the mail? Or is that for the apostille process only? I did mention on the application that I want to teach in South Korea. Am I screwed? |

No to the signed authenticated version, sorta yes for the apostille process question, and no, you're not necessarily screwed.
In order to get a federal apostille attached to your FBI CBC from the Authentications Office, you have to explicitly ask for a seal and signature to be applied to your CBC. Once you have the seal and signature, you can send your CBC to the Authentications Office and have an apostille affixed. If you didn't ask for them, you can:
1) contact the FBI CJIS division and ask them if you can add the request to your application
2) send your CBC back to the FBI after you receive it and ask for the seal and signature (probably a waste of time/not recommended)
3) send your CBC off for a state level apostille (Riker has a thread going that indicates which states can/cannot affix an apostille to a CBC, but you should double check any information you find on the thread for yourself. Found here: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=200961&start=0 )
If you go the state route, you'll have to find out what the SOS for whatever state you pick requires for the apostille as each state is different.
Best of luck. |

Alright, I sent an e-mail to the FBI and I'll call them Monday during business hours to try and verify that they can do it for me - I don't wanna risk any delays. I only sent it a week or so ago. I'll send it to my SOS's office for the apostille, I've heard it's a bit faster. |
