x-ray and splint costs nearly nothing, about 20-000 i broke my thumb over the winter and it cost me next to nothing even with weekly checkups they insisted on - each xray was 12,000

Get an ulna gutter splint or cast and depending on the break it will be ok in 4-6 weeks.

I had this break from a basketball game in Jr. High.

Funny I never heard it called boxer's fracture and the first thing I thought of was that you got cracked in the jaw. Cool

We talking split knuckle of the middle finger? I feel your pain. I seem to remember its about 5 weeks to get back to normality.

In the meantime...its amazing how much an apparently small injury affects your overall ability to do anything.

it's a break in the 5th metacarpal - above the pinkie knuckle....a tolerable fracture in an intolerable patient. i have use of my thumb and twofingers but i do feel gimped. never broke a bone before in my life.

the splints that my doctor is using for my hand are somewhat ill fitting and keep causing the bone placement (which he hasso far performed about 3x per visit - yeowza) to be lost. things will likely be ok in the end but i had a dream where i complained about the splint and the doctor and nursing staff excitedly explained that the splint, indeed all of their equipment, was a shoddy japanese import unloaded en masse in korea. only an expat in korea can dream such absurdities.

i suppose i had the dream due to lying on the doc bed and staring at the toshiba xray machine

They need to make you a plaster cast . It will look like a gutter, hence the name Ulna gutter cast, and a long ace bandage. You put your hand in the molded cast, wrap the ace bandage around the cast and your arm /hand and when need be you can take the cast off to shower then put it back on when done.

in my case its a soft splint with a bandage around it. i was told not to wash the hand. the problem is even minor movements make the splint and bandages slip slightly out of place

but, whatever. i am being as compliant as i can be, so hopefully it turns out ok. if not...well, i went to a random clinic and i got what i paid for

If your not comfortable with the diagnosis get a second opinion.
As far as taking the splint off. I was in Jr high and just did things like normal. I actually broke the first cast from dunking on a lowered goal. My mom was upset that I had to go back and get another cast. The Dr just laughed and said boys will be boys. But they had not problem with me taking the cast off to shower and then wrapping it just as they had shown in the office.

As long as the bone is set it should heal fine. I would take some calcium supplements or drink a little more milk too. Good luck.

i'd go to another place but it was hard enough to find a place that was open when i get out of work, and close enough. only other option is the ER.

my bone isnt too stable though. he set it, i wore the splint, it was out of alignment again a few days later (i could clearly see it on the xray). another appt tomorrow so we'll see, but glad to hear it isnt much to worry about. ever look it up on the internet? some people get pretty bad breaks.
