Hi, just wanted to check if there's any kyopos or Asian looking native speakers working at Wall Street Institute.

My background - I'm Chinese American and Interested in working at this chain because I need a Part time job and a visa while I study Korean at Yonsei.

Thanks

If you check this TV ad for Wall Street Institute:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Nqsh3rNsII

You'll notice that the teacher is Asian.

So I assume they don't discriminate against people from the East.

(Hot chicks anyway)

I could be wrong, but I always assumed she was a student. But then again, I can't read Korean. Maybe it makes it clear she is a teacher.

Well on second, and third, and fourth, and fifth looks I agree. She IS hot.

Oh wait.. that's not what you said.

On the sixth look, I DEFINITELY do not see any white, black or native Americans in the video. Presumably there IS a teacher somewhere, so.. they must be asian. And hot. Unless WSI is just a big scam and there are no teachers.

Well no disagreement with you that she is hot. But I just asked a Korean friend who agrees she is a student. I think the commercial is trying to go for the "we study hard and we play hard " message. Maybe aimed at the upwardly mobile but unmarried demographic.

Anyway, I worked at WSI for a short time and there were good after class times like that - no doubt about it.

Just apply. The worst thing they can do is say no.

I worked at a branch in Bangkok and can assure you break dancing was never taught in any lessons. I don't remember seeing any "street art" or rapping classes either. Or DJ 101 come to that. That Seoul branch looks amazing. And she is fit for sure.

WSI is recognized as pretty much the only "good" hagwon, or at least hagwon with a good reputation. They pay well, they don't overwork you, they follow the law and contract, they have options other than split shifts (it's mostly part time) and the curriculum is decent.

Most WSI employees are F visa holders who already have housing, since WSI doesn't provide it to part timers. Most are Gyopos, or are married to Koreans, thus most have been in Korea for quite some time, usually 3-4 years at least when they are hired. That makes the teaching quality better as well. Most of those teachers already have their own housing, so the part time/full time thing isn't a problem, as far as paid housing is concerned. There aren't many other companies that do all that.

In Thailand they require perspective employees to sit a grammar test.

Hey RMNC you are right about WSI being a decent place to work, but not sure where you got your info about the "most's" you cited.

I worked at one of the 2 Busan branches and at that time(they have since combined 2 into 1), all eight of us were E2 visa holders, and none of us were Gyopos. Same with the other branch too. You are right about them usually hiring teachers with Korean experience, but not always. I was hired with one year experience, and one of my co-workers had none.

The reason that housing was not a problem for part timers was not that we already had it, but that it was worth giving up in order to get a legal 2nd job, which is why we wanted part time in the first place. Paying for our own housing was worth it because we more than made up for it with the extra income we made, and working about the same amount of hours to boot.

^^^^^That's not to say they would not hire a Gyopo and I would also encourage the OP to apply.

There was a tendency for students to expect 'native looking' teachers. With 'native looking', I mean those that are of ethnic Asian appearances were considered unsuitable but this was years ago when they first started but I know some gyopos that worked there that were looked like a native speaker.

Sorry to bring a thread back from the dead but i wanted to reply.

I applied to WSI a week before i posted this but didnt get anything yet. The reason i started the thread is because I proactively walked into my local Sinchon branch, to talk to the receptionist and asked about whether they were hiring native speakers.

She immediately asked me questioningly "Are you a native speaker?"
I said yes, and then she said, "no, we're not hiring, thanks." without checking anything or asking anybody. Kind of an odd exchange

I just wanted to check with 'the cafe' if the company only hired caucasians or if this one lady was just being an idiot/impolite to me/they really were fully staffed so even the receptionist is keenly aware they're not hiring.

from what you guys are saying it sounds like they're actually decent people and the lady was just having a bad day, so I'll try hitting up the other branches.

Oh and if you guys have any tips for applying to Pagoda/WSI jobs besides the standard application form I'm all ears of course, otherwise i will just be pounding the pavement.

WSI likes to hire people who know their workers and staff already in addition to having experience/credentials. I'd imagine being married and indicating you'd be here for awhile would help since many of the foreigner managers there were in it for the long haul.

They have alot of applications these days....even a decent recomendation to HR won't get you a job offer.

Pagoda has a reputation near Wonderland levels in terms of job satisfaction.

Getting an interview with them should be easy as hell.[/url]

I've heard good things about Pagoda on this board, so I applied two weeks ago. No dice yet though. is there something I should be doing to get this "easy" interview? and were you trying to link to something?
