Okay, My girlfriend and I have done one year each in a hagwon (myself in Geoje and my girlfriend in Yangsan). Then we moved to Seoul together, worked for SMOE, each taking the housing allowance, and shared a flat in Itaewon. Now, we want to move back to Korea and live anywhere really, but live together and teach public school again.
This is tricky.
We fancy a change from Seoul and it seems that everywhere in the country other than Itaewon requires a big chunk of change for key money which we don't have (we only paid 1m in Itaewon).
We're not against taking hagwon positions other than the fact that we want to have more than the 10 days vacation offered by most private schools. Has anybody heard of anyone ever receiving a position that offers what we are looking for - essentially couple housing (unmarried) with public school vacation days?

I don't think I've heard of it.
You have to understand that hagwons are businesses. Giving an additional 2 weeks of vacation, paid or not, means that there are an additional 2 weeks during the year where the school isn't making money.
Without a financial incentive, there really isn't much reason for a hagwon to offer it.
Plus, there are plenty of teachers who would be willing to accept a position that meets the standard 10 days, so there really isn't a recruitment incentive either. Should the economy go back to 2007 or so, maybe you could negotiate for a bit more time, but otherwise I don't see it happening.
Keep in mind, there are always exceptions, but I can say, with a degree of certainty, that it is a rare thing.
If you want that kind of time off - go public. |

Yeah I do get that about hagwons. I guess I was more asking if anyone had any experience getting public school positions and being provided with couple housing when they were unmarried. We want the holidays of a public school with the couple housing of a couple hagwon position.
Perhaps I just want my cake and to eat it also. |

I would say that it is more likely to find a public school that will offer shared housing than a private language school that will offer 4 weeks vacation.
The issue is that most public schools only hire 1 teacher, and the major programs, like EPIK, have a policy of not providing shared housing to unmarried couples.
But, again, exceptions can be found, as I'm sure the Dave's community is aware. |
