I have now applied to 3 different UK universities to do an MA in TESOL/TEFL. I'm pleased to say I've been offered a place at the University of Nottingham. I await a decision from Leeds and Swansea University.

Swansea University is in Wales, UK.

I will decide where to go after I hear from all 3 institutions. I think that'll be soon.

The University of Nottingham is one of the best universities in the world. Swansea University may offer a scholarship and is a little cheaper than the course in Leeds and Nottingham.

I am not very keen to go to the University of Nottingham because it is in my home town. I think it'll be very boring to be there for a year. Mainly, because I know it so well.

This course will cost alot of money, but I've calculated I can afford it. According to my calculations, The MA will 'definitely pay for itself.' Laughing

If all 3 universities offer a place, which one would you suggest I choose?

Really? One of the best in the UK, undoubtedly, but one of the best in the world?

Just two things to consider:

1) Avoid debt
2) Knock it out as quickly as possible

Forget the 'experience of grad school'; that whole 'experience thing' is for undergrad freshmen.

And always remember:

Once you get your MA, nobody cares where you did your BA.

Once you get your Ph.D., nobody cares where you did your MA.

Once you get your Ph.D., nobody cares about your GPA.

I have calculated I could afford the course without incurring debts, as long as my land in Brazil is sold in good time.

I really don't care about anything other than successfully passing the course. Laughing

Go for the cheapest and fastest program, then, and factor in the cost of living.

If you can live at home and attend the one place, why not, especially if it is the most recognized name and wouldn't cost any more?

So you know the place. Don't sweat it. You'll have time between semesters to get out and about.

This really is a decision you have to make for yourself. Can't see any input from a chat board helping too much. Just knock out the degree somewhere and get back into the work force. No biggie.

Listen to PRagic: if you've already been accepted, are in the country, and money is no issue, then simply put in the time and complete the degree. My own preference is to attend the best program possible at that time, but everyone has different reasons for pursuing graduate study. And don't worry about successfully completing the program.

Is there a supervised practicum in the program? If you have already taught abroad or in your own country, the most difficult part will be having to deal with a potentially, um, let's just say, less than stellar coordinating teacher.

Swansea Uni is a decent place. Campus is ugly but small and easy to get around, good enough nightlife only 15 mins walk away. The beach is opposite the uni and the city itself is a nice place to live.

never been to nottingham or leeds so can't comment on those

Thank you for your comments. I have put off doing further study, partly due to anxiety about failing it. I have my reasons for this concern.

I've been told by many people the MA in TESOL/TEFL is easy, after careful research I feel semi-confident it is doable.

I could live at home in Nottingham for a year and study at one of the world's best universities. Truthfully, I need my own space, living at home for a year would be a bit of a stress.

Or I could go to Swansea, which is a little cheaper and I'd hope it is a bit easier too. Perhaps, all of these courses are similar, regardless of the institution's reputation.

I don't believe there is a practicum, but there is a practical route for less experienced teachers.

Really, I'm just finishing off my last semester of course work then onto my thesis. A lot of reading involved trying to get my head around different SLL approaches, Bilingualism, cognition etc. Not a walk in the park. You have to do the research.

Of course many MA TESOL programs are a bit of a joke but the one that I am doing is high quality (and it is in Seoul)

I've heard there is alot of reading involved. I have no exams to do, so I don't see this being too difficult. If I do the assignments properly, I should be ok. Same goes for the dissertation.

Aren't you concerned about recognition of a course from South Korea?

Yes, that is a good questions. If I am talking about name recognition there may be a problem. But if i discuss what I did during my time (work load etc) I am more than confident that I can sell myself.

I have looked at what people do for distant learning MA TESOL/Ling, programs compared to the one that I'm doing now. Theirs are a piece of cake/walk in the park compared to mine.

Yep, I have no exams but intense reading, weekly journal articles to write, midterm and final written paper, presentations as well. The final semester you have a choice of either a practicuum or thesis. Most of the distant learning Ma's that I know of just have 4 semesters of course work. This one is 4 semesters plus the semester to write the thesis or practicuum (so 5 semesters).

Quality was a choice for me and this program does offer a high quality. THere are universities in the UK and the US would accept me for a PHD (actually, one of the prof. is encouraging me to continue on - but I will need a break after the thesis paper).

But each to their own I suppose. I would back my MA upto most that have an equivalent here from their respective countries

Fair enough, as long as it gets you from A to B, that's all that matters.
