Hi,
I'm in the process of submitting my final application to EPIK. I have listed Busan and Seoul as my 1st and 2nd choice cities. Based on the information from my recruiter, and EPIK's website, it seems I'm qualified for 2.1 in Busan, and 2.3 in Seoul.
I would rather live in Busan, but feel like with an M.A. I should be making more than 2.1. However, I also realize that the cost of living is higher in Seoul....
So, basically, I'm asking if the extra 200,000 won I'd be getting in Seoul will allow me to save more money....or will the higher cost of living there cancel out the extra pay?
Sorry for the long winded explanation, and any advice anyone has would be really appreciated. |

Apart from accommodation, which I assume is included as part of the salary package, I'm not sure there's such a big difference in prices between the two cities to make up 200,000 won. I've been to Busan many times and never noticed any differences. However, I've never done a comparison shop in supermarkets. |

You're dealing with the two largest cities in the country, although Seoul is significantly larger. I've never lived in Busan, but have been on a number of occasions. It never struck me that anything was significantly cheaper down there. |

If you're applying for EPIK, you aren't going to Seoul. You go to Seoul with SMOE.
The province that surrounds Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, is with the GEPIK program.
Everything outside Seoul and Gyeonggi-do is EPIK.
If you'd rather go to Busan, I'd go there. They probably pay less because the cost of living is less there (only a guess).
What's your MA in? (Rhetorical question, if you like.) You can bump your pay with actual teaching cetifications or with a TEFL certificate, and/or years teaching experience. |

Bascially prices in Busan are cheaper for certain things.
Restaurants (Korean), cabs, public transit (but that has risen a lot in the past few years) are still cheaper than Seoul.
Realestate is a lot cheaper if you intend on buying or renting (may not apply to you however!).
I prefer Busan because its smaller than Seoul, has the beach and has a better vibe than Seoul (just my opinion). |
