i'm trying to get the ball rolling with all this rigamarole with the crimimal background check and diploma

my understanding of doing the diploma:

1) you need to have a copy of the diploma notarized

2) you need to have it apostiled

but my understanding is that you have to have it notarized in the same state you have it apostiled in. i contacted notaries in my state and they said that they cannot notarize a document through the mail, that it must be done in person. which leaves me with 2 undesirable options: 1) go back there in person [DO NOT WANT TO DO] 2) give someone in my family power of attorney to sign for me [a totally unfamiliar process to me which i'm not sure i want to do]

my questions: is it possible for me to get this done from korea without having to go back to the u.s.?

also, i've heard that this whole process of getting the diploma apostiled has been postponed until next year. is this true or just a rumor?

anyone who has sound, founded knowledge of this, your answers to these questions would be much appreciated

Ok, so it's pretty simple. If someone back home has your ORINGAL degree, then they simply go to the library or bank to get the copy notarised. Then send that copy to the Sec of State and get it apostillised.

Power of Attorney is NOT necessary. If a notary tells you that, go elsewhere. I've had my mom take my dos to get notarised MANY times. And she's taken foreign language docs as well. All the notary is saying is that the COPY is real copy.

So you either have to send your degree home or write to your school and say you lost it and get another one. I didi that it, cost $25 and was sent to my mom. Now I have two.

The apostillissation is being put off, but this is Korea, some kimmi officers might ask for it.

I was confused on this as well. I went to a family friend who is a lawyer to have it notarized and he stated he couldn't do it for some because he couldn't verify that it was an exact copy.

I called my University and they did it for me there. They made a photo copy of it and notarized it right there.

Now my issue is if the Dept of State will put an Apostille on a "state" document. The info they have is conflicting how I read it. I have to send me CBC to DOS so I just wanted them all done at the same time.

Does anyone know if the DOS will Apostille diplomas?

for anyone who is interested-- the conclusion:

so i ended up sending a scanned copy of my diploma to a notary who works in the registrar at my university. she notarized it within hours and sent it back to me. very quick and easy. no hassle and no charge

now on to stage 2: sending it to get the apostille

So do you have to get the diploma notarized to get the apostille? I was under the impression that you can just send it to the Sec. of State and get it apostilled without notarization.

I take it that the seal and signature on the FBI CBC counts as "notarization"?
