what's the worst thing you have done at work in korea?
will bex can attest to the truth of this story.
one evening after work my director organised a "getting to know the new teachers" drink and dine - by the 3rd round i was well and truly plastered. everyone (the newbies included) were having a great time.
anyway - one of the korean teachers whispers to me that my conspiciously absent korean co-teacher had been fired. no warning, nothing. i started to stew a bit and got a little hot-headed with the director. i am a big loyalty buff - look after ya mates.
so i get a little angry and basically ask "wtf"? things are glossed over, but i stay on the boil. she attempts to break the ice by proposing a toast. i proceed to knock her drink out of her hand and stand and tell her that:
- she is f----ed
- she has no sense of honour
- she has no loyalty
- she is the very reason no one wants to work at the school
- expletive
- expletive
- if she continues to act like this the school is doomed and i will help take it down
- expletive
- exit
somehow, i didn't get fired. in fact, they were actually worried that i would quit.
so, bring it on. what's your worst?

gato - still denying your past, eh? don't sweat it, mate. i am sure you are a HUGE success in england. aintcha?
epilogue: whilst my sentiments were warranted, my behavior was not. the next morning (first thing) i went and apologised to the director for my outburst.

Was working for EPIK, was on a field trip with all teachers from different schools and coming back home I was tired. It was one of those noli-bong buses and everybody was singing. That I didn't mind. But one guy kept on talking, and the talking and wasn't even that cool by the way the crowd was reacting, it went on and on, so I told the guy to SHUT UP!, which proceeded to end all conversation and singing for the rest of the trip. Not very cool, but I already knew I was leaving that joint. When we got back, had the oldest teacher try to make me sit on the ground and read me the riot act. I walked away, offered to resign that day, but was told to stay. Like I said, I knew I was getting out of that situation and did. |

This story is totally true.
I got my walking papers from the same lady two days after that. Her mistake was that I had a full week of classes ahead of me, AND to introduce me to my replacement who they then asked me to train. The following is the least arseholish thing I did that week.
The following day, the very smart 7 year old Kinder class mentioned to me that the teacher in question quit because she was getting married. To summarize the following conversation:
"Nope, that's a lie. She got fired."
"Why would they lie?"
"Adults lie to kids all of the time. They think you're dumb."
My Korean partner got angry at me for that. But considering the bumrush I got from the school, I didnt care if I made things difficult for them. |

I think I told this story elsewhere...
It's IMF time. I was very stressed - managed to get my vacation time that was due to me and headed to thailand. While there i rented a motorcycle had an accident and removed all of the skin from my lower left leg. And I mean all - I could actually see my anklebone.
Vacation is cut short to go back to Korea for better medical attention. I can't walk, as my leg has swollen up like the good year blimp. I call the director he says okay. Next day the owner walks into my apartment without knocking and proceeds to tell me that I'm lazy and I did this on purpose so that I could extend my vacation.
I snapped big time - spent about 15-20 minutes telling my boss to f*** himself, take his job and shove it up his A** etc. Didn't get fired - and actually got my severence pay. There's more but it basically comes down to me telling my boss to F*** off. as violently as I possibly could while standing on one leg. |

A Korean kindergarten teacher gave me one of those little strawberry yogurt milks on my very first day which I greedily drank (worst thing I have done) and I forgot to check the (3 week expired) used by date... I made it to 5 mins before classes finished, dismissed everyone early and ran with them out the door and straight into the loo... man I HATE chucking into a squat loo... |

I wish I had something cool to add in here... however, the only thing i ever did was raise my voice at the director's wife.
At my old school, I was stuck with the last class (7:45-8:30) every day, while all of the other teachers alternated. Every day, the director and/or his wife closed up everything during the last class, so that by 8:31 they were ready to go out the door. Every day after class, I'd be in the teacher's room gathering my things together and getting out as quickly as I could, yet every day one of them was always on my ass, saying, "Let'sha go!" After a couple weeks of this, I was feeling sick one night, and looking for the medicine a Korean teacher had given me earlier. When 8:32 hit, the director's wife walked in and said, "Let'sha go!" I just looked at her and yelled, "For the love of God, wait!" She just backed out of the room quietly... I felt like an ass, but I never heard "Let'sha go!" again... |

Wow , u guyz are so crazy.
My german friend Hans taught in Korea , even though he's german, the direktor said he didnt want any blacks or filipinos . He slept wiv alot of the wimmin, and went to Thaland a lot, in fact every vacation, 'cos no-one else was doing that , it s just so original, and slept wiv some more wimmin , and worked for hagwon on a year to year basis, and actually got severe (nce)pay, and a flight back to Dusseldorf, and lived for yearz in one of those crazee cute korean partments , with all the friendly neighbors popping round to borrow sum sugar, and oh ya
he used to hang around itaweon, he was so crazy , and he would often drink soju, or beer and enjoy the great american culture there , watching baseball instead the Champions League.
Ja, he's now a bank manager in bremen and he 's so bored. He wishes he could be back in Korea again - the land of smiles. |

man, that was perfect! i couldn't have anticipated a better reply. the whole mimic-cu/m-satire thing was perfectly executed. this is the best i have seen from you since you pretended to be korean on the lonely planet thorntree. man, and the unorthodox punctuation, whilst disconcerting at first, just seemed to add your unique mystique to the whole mix. it's like a digital watermark OR a sitcom catchphrase. dyn-O-mite! loved it.
and my regards to hans
