I took my guitar to g-cat next to Sangsu in Seoul to get new pickups fitted and have to say the guy was less than helpful. He spoke to my girlfriend in Korean and then complained that i didn't speak enough Korean. I never had the chance.
G-cat then phoned us after we had left and had found more problems that would cost more.
G-cat man also said i would have got a discount if i had spoken Korean, but because i didn't i would have to pay the full amount.

I won't be using G-cat again and I recommend everyone to avoid G-cat. The guy in MD guitars is much nicer and speaks English. His wife doesn't but i've had some basic conversations with her in my limited Korean.

Yes!

I went there last year to get the 5-way pickup selector in my strat replaced. I went with my girlfriend, whose male Korean friend had recommended G-Cat.

The dude wasn't as rude to me as he was to you, but it was the same kind of situation. My girlfriend did all the talking, and I was not at all impressed with the service. I asked questions but the dude sort of ignored me, and I felt he charged too much. At least he did the replacement right.

I also wouldn't recommend this place for repairs or otherwise. There are so many other competent but also friendly places in Nakwon.

Hi fortysixyou.
I had been to g-cat before and a younger guy did the work. I spoke my limited Korean and he did a great job. The older guy is who i dealt with (or should i say my girlfriend dealt with) and my girlfriend and I got a "used car salesman" vibe from him.
The guy in MD near the Nonghyup bank exit of Hongdae station is much better. He speaks English and knows his stuff. He is fairly emotionless and sometimes comes across as rude but that is how he acts with everyone. His wife is a sweetheart. I went there first because he has leveled the frets and changed the pickups, pots, and swith on my Epiphone Dot, changed the pickups on my Squier Jagmaster, and fixed the original bridge, then replaced it with a TOM bridge when i changed my mind, on my Jazzmaster. I went to him first before g-cat but he was ill and i was in a rush to get the pickups fitted.
Give MD a try next time and let me know how you get on.

The fact pickup and pots are the same in Korean as in English seems to have passed him by.
Anyway the pickups are buzzing like crazy even in the hum-cancelling position so he appears to be rude and incompetent.
Avoid g-cat.

Yeah, it's a strange one.
I'm wondering what the difference between us is that resulted in such a different reaction. You speak good Korean (which in itself commands my respect).
Were you with your girlfriend?
Are you white/kyopo/black?
Is there anything about you that would make him positively predisposed towards you?

only if its 1950s, in good condition, and maybe if it has the amp case.

Gibson Les Paul, Gold Top. I have been looking at getting either the 54 Re-issue with the single coils or the 57 Re-issue with the humbuckers. Either used or 2nd hand. My question is, what is the main difference in sound between the humbuckers and the single coils? Will it be a heavier, biting sound with the humbuckers? Also, one of the guitars is a 2010 and the other one is a 2009. How much do these re-issues change from year to year - i.e., a 2009 57 re-issue vs. a 2011 57 re-issue? Les Pauls come in so many different versions in terms of models and years that it gets a little confusing. But I'm looking for more of a classic-rock, raunchy type Stones / Zeppelin sound for my next axe.

But, in the spirit of the topic here, go to where you feel you're treated the best. It's the same with owning a motorcycle; I go and get my parts and service for my bikes at shops that treat me with respect and are honest with me in terms of what I need. For some reason, everyone has a slightly different experience; I get treated well at one shop where a buddy says he's been treated like crap. Find the place you like and stick with it. Relationships and familiarity are very important here - whether you are *good* at speaking Korean or not.

Happiness,

What do you know about the the Les Paul Classic, Gold Top 1999? - Les Paul Classic - 1999 Gold Top

Ishibashi in Japan. They even take international orders and it's cheaper to to buy a guitar from outside of Japan with them than if you were a resident in Japan. No sales tax for people living outside of Japan. So the guitar can be as much as $100 cheaper.

thats a fender japan strato link.

i never buy any guitars on the net, but if you have to, def. look for some discussions about it. Im not much for RI guitars. IMO, It depends what the weight is. I find LP's have a better (for me, better means darker with a longer sustain) if they are heavier. I had a lovely mid-weight (6-8 lbs) Tokai lawsuit from 81 or so that played better than most Gibbies Ive touched. Billy Gibbons also plays one. Anyway.

Yeah, those links have both changed and don't go to the guitars I was talking about. What is an RI guitar?
