2, silly.
Why is 6 afraid of 7?
Because 7 - 8 - 9.
Now go outside and get some sun
on that pasty body of yours. |

Because if you write it like a normal equation that is the answer.

2(9+3)

I thought the order of operations was PEMDAS,
parentheses
exponents
multiplication
division
addition and finally
subtraction |

Answer
48
__ * (9+3) = 288
2
It's not 48/(2(9+3)) = 2
You are adding brackets that don't exist.
Either way, the equation is poorly written. |

482(9+3)=288
...because:
48 2 (9 + 3) = 48 2 x (9+3) = 48 2 x (12) = 24 x (12) = 288
I could have dropped the parentheses once I added 9 and 3, because with the multiplication symbol, they are redundant. In order for 2 to be the solution, the formula would have to be written with additional parentheses:
48 (2 (9 + 3)) = 48 (2 x (9 + 3)) = 48 (2 x (12)) = 48 (24) = 2
So, RMNC and Google are right. |

Not to get too serious in this thread, but I read a math blog that was comparing elementary math textbooks today from ones in the early 21st century. At the time, kids spent a ton of energy solving variations of this math "problem" , which was a complete waste of time. If you really want computer-grade accuracy, then use Polish Notation, otherwise context is important.
So my vote? Both. |

Something must be wrong on your end. That link for me goes to google.com's calculator, with the equation and answer as 288. |
