|
|
So I decided to rent my own place and drop my own key money down.
Found a nice rooftop apartment. At the time, the owner was STILL renovating the whole place and adding an addition. It was a totally ground up job. I figured it would look brand new and I stupidly agreed to rent the place since every renovated place looks the same here.
Moved in 2 weeks later and it's the crappiest renovation in Korean history, BUT functional. Looks like a habitat for humanity home made by retard volunteers. What DIY house actually looks like when not made by Bob Villa.
Problem is the bad renovation left many entry holes and hiding places for cockroaches. Within weeks I was swarmed by them. It's such a crappy job that no amount of caulking or tape is gonna stop unless I tear it down to the concrete base. Believe me I've tried. I can even hear them moving behind the cheap, airy, wallpaper.
What's the best way to solve this probelm? Cancel my lease?
What are my options for getting my Key money back or forcing him to fix the problem.
-------
I think I patched all the holes to the outside so I could call an exterminator.
The owner lives below me and he's a decent fellow who's always helped fix problems. I like the place, but the bugs due to the renovation quality is the final straw.
EDIT: If you guys help me, I'll post some high quality pics for comedy. My bathroom alone looks like it was made by fred flintstone. |

It's standard practice in Korea when a landlord makes some promises about renovations or other things before you move in to have them added in detail to the lease before you sign it. For example, Owner promises to replace wallpaper by X date, owner promises to replace bathroom tile by Y date, etc. In which case if the owner fails to do it you would have legitimate grounds for breaking the lease. I don't know if you had any of this written on your lease, or if it would even make a difference in your case. It sounds like your landlord did do the renovations, but he did a terrible job of it. In this case I'm not sure what happens. You might want to talk to a real estate agent or someone who is an expert in this field, but I don't really think there is much you can do about it.
If you do decide to leave anyway the standard rules would most likely apply. You would be responsible for finding someone to either take over your lease or sign a new lease. You could advertise it yourself or pay a real estate agent to do it for you. You would get your deposit money back whenever a new person moves in.
Final idea... you say the owner is a decent and helpful guy. Have you tried telling him about this or asking him to fix it? What did he say? |

He doesn't have to give you back your key money until the end of the lease period. Your only real option is to find another sucker to take over your lease. |

He says "it's sealed up pretty good".
He thinks I brought them in. It's certainly possible since he didn't install window screens(he'll do it now) for bugs
I think it's sealed up pretty good now(looked top to bottom 4x n small place made of concrete), so getting rid of the last nest in the kitchen should do it. One more tiny room to go.
Anybody know where to get Borax and Borix acid??? Perhaps something industrial grade to spray? |
