I won't be renewing my contract with my school this August and I want to change jobs from Public School (SMOE) to something private maybe even with adults (6am classes Shocked)

The best positions are filled through word of mouth, but sadly I am a little short on good connections.

So is it too early to start contacting recruiters for positions starting in August?

Will recruiters work with me this early in the year?

WAY too early. Start contacting recruiters no earlier than a month and a half before you plan on starting at the new place.

Might be a little early.

I think the earlier you start the better.
It will give you time to get all the stuff you need, and do better research into the recruiting companies you want to deal with.

Though everyone has a different experience, you'll notice some will take a lot of interest in you and try to help you whereas others won't even answer a simple e-mail.

For private, apply to as many as possible.
Also keep your eyes peeled on private schools posting their own (which is rarer but still possible); and take a look at what people are offering through sites (such as the job fair here; or craigslist from what I hear). It will complement your research into recruiters; though some of these display their listings too.

Applying early also gives you more time to look at opportunities and you may see a great opportunity you won't want to pass up on (I just saw an amazing deal, and unfortunately can't take it because of timing).

Just my opinion though.

EDIT: I've started now for jobs in August/September and have already gotten replies. Just saying it's not impossible. It'll give me the flexibility and opportunity to be a little more picky than a "last minute" decision.
