Have any of you had it stated in your contract that you'll receive off but haven't? I just got word that I won't have off a national holiday and am sort of pissed about having to work when I shouldn't. Is it worth fighting?

If it is one day, hand them the pacifier and then cry like a baby.

Ask for it back, you'll need it when you are a Daddy-O.

I am guessing, you miss your beer parties at college. Time to grow up son.

Hmm, not quite, but when you only have 10 days of vacation and you rely on having days off for holidays, it sucks to get shafted any time that would be great to have off.

If you are cool man, like with the in crowd, yo wee yo wee yo, you already got those.

You are only bitching about 1 day off?

What is the total damage man??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

You seem to refuse to answer that in a desperate attempt to act coolio with your foolios.

What is the scoop? Are you crying like a sissy or man enough to move on?

I think YTMND might be drunk...

OP, what does your contract say? Were they upfront about you having to work on holidays? If not, tell them you want them off. If they absolutely need you to work, see if you can't bargain for a different day off down the road or an extra day added to your vacation. Don't feel bad asking for what you're legally entitled to.

He never mentioned multiple days. Does he feel like he needs 2 days off?

Ask him that.

if it's a "red day" on the calendar don't work it if your contract says you get national holidays off.

If I were in that position I would question it at the very least. What am I expected to do? How long will I be at work? Will I be teaching? etc.. etc..

Then if I really really don't want to do it, then I may suck in my teeth and mention that I had already made plans for the holiday and it will be a big deal to change those plans. Usually that works in my school backing down, but if they didn't I would probably do it but emphasize the fact that this is a big deal and I wouldn't be doing it again.

I would definitely make it like you are doing them a favour and that it will be a one off only. Otherwise it would give them license to walk all over you in the future.

Some holidays are more "national" than others & if they fall on weekends they dont count for anything, but if you're talking about next wednesday (Liberation Day), that one is unequivocal & missty's advice is spot on.

You could also try bargaining for adding that holiday to your 10 days, something like 'okay, I'll work it. . . but I want Monday off.'

If your contracts says you get national holidays, then you get national holidays. No questions.

This I like, sometimes negotiation and compromise is great. The vacation falls on a Wednesday, work gives me a slow Friday or Monday sometime in the next month, I am happy.

Of course the major problem is many hagwons and bosses do not get the concept of you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.

Or they try to fudge things like oh sorry you do not get Holiday pay? Actually would salaried teachers get extra pay?

Plus an option is plan for a slow day. Some student gone. Show a video, play a game, do something fun.
