Hi There,
I'm looking to take my first job teaching in Korea, and I have been considering a few contracts for teaching jobs in Seoul. So far I have passed up a few otherwise good looking contracts, because the hours were so long and intense.
Is it normal to work 10am-7pm M-F, with 130 teaching hours per session (20 days)? I'm finding a lot of jobs at 2.3mill won a month, 16,000WON overtime, and all the other normal contract stipulations.
Should I just take the jobs my recruiter is offering me? What I'm looking for is a job with less hours, even if it means less pay. I would rather make a few hundred every month, but not be working 9-10 hour days.
I'm looking to leave anywhere between late June and late August. Should I just keep looking harder? Are there jobs in Seoul for first-timers where I can teach more like 110 hours a month? And only be working at the school for 8 hours a day, without having to take work home?
My problem is that looking around at what people have posted on the internet, I haven't been able to get a good idea of what is a standard teaching job IN SEOUL and not all of Korea.
Any help would be much appreciated! |

10am to 7pm....ugh....I wouldn't even be bothered to come here for that....
It's a kindergarten btw....and no...being a playful person doesn't make it any less bearable. |

Only you can decide what is or is not acceptable. The hours are long, but a few minutes reading about teaching in Korea would have told you that. 6 teaching hours per day (your average) is pretty much normal if not a bit high; you must ask yourself if the remaining idle hours are going to be a problem (split shifts?), but depending on your motivations, it will give you time to study teaching, the language, etc. |

Or it's really fun and you'll love it. Perhaps you're not really a playful person. |

I teach 1 hour of first graders a day.....can be a real hassle....easily my least favorite type of classes. The language barrier is huge and I speak some korean!
Now try 8+ hours a day and younger.
My friend said it's absolutely nightmarish if you have a hang over. |

You'd never catch me being a kinder teacher.
I'd rather stay home unless it's the elite kindies that work you 10 am to 4 pm and pay 2.7. Those aren't bad. |

It depends on the kids and the school. I really don't have an issue with discipline, so if I need my kids to be quiet they are.
I use Korean extremely minimally, and my kids learn very, very fast. The language barrier is huge for about two weeks, after which point it stops being a problem. I've had my current kids for seven weeks and they understand my directions without issue and speak zero Korean during English time, including the bathroom and gym time.
There's a huge difference between teaching kids for one hour a day of English time and kids who are immersed in it for six hours a day. I've done both, and the former essentially learn nothing, while the latter will be close to fluent after two years, assuming solid instruction with a solid curriculum. Teaching kindergarten age kids after school absolutely blows, but it's a totally different beast than teaching kindergarten full time. |

| I would recommend you go to Thailand if you're not worried about money. If you want to be in a big city, try Bangkok. China's on the rise and has many big cities to teach in as well. China may have similar working hours however. |

asking for an average is very hard since their are many different types of schools all with different hours.
Standard hours can range anywhere from 5 hours a day on the low end, to 10 or 11 hours a day on the high end with various teaching hours as well. You might get some schools who work about 80 hours a month while others teach 140.
Pay is a little more standard and I would expect around 2.2-2.1 if you are a first timer with no experience and or relevant degree. |
