As I sit here reading these posts I start to notice something about myself, my attention span is so bad, I click on a post and if it doesnt catch me right off the bat I go to the next, this is a metophor for my life I think, Man I need to slow down and apply myself! Like I did briefly in college, like i did a lot working a regular job(esl excluded). Anyone got the attention span of a gerbal like I seem to find myself in lately, and how do we rectify this? Read more books? slow it down some? I think there are many people like me in this forum who just scan down these posts but really dont contribute anything substantial to the forum, just a few quips here and there, for the fodder of the masses. Well my attention is wavering again so now I must leave and do some worthless bullshitting to a former gf who just messaged me, any comments on how the slackers of the world can get their attention back!

Just as a side note, I've been curious if attention spans haven't gotten shorter for most people compared to the past. More distractions these days. Were we as distracted as kids as the ones now are? Everything moves faster. TV has a lot more channels and more images per 30 sec ad. Computer games have gotten faster, more exciting perhaps. Kids seem to get bored more easily than I remember as a kid. Entertainment demands have never been greater. So your short attention span may be part of a larger thing.

Oh excuse me while I use my cell phone, surf the net, read a book, change channels and drive to work while eating a sandwich.

I think it has to do with the advance of technology and the rise of "convenience". If you look at kid's toys from 30 years ago, the most high tech anything got was a Betsy-Wetsy doll that went potty when you squeezed her or a cap gun. Almost everything else was something you had to use your imagination for: building blocks...puzzles...dirt... (heck I wasn't alive, what else was there to play with?).

Now all the toys do everything for you. The action figures and Barbies talk, there are even books that read themselves out loud (although this does have some benefits, there's no substitute for a real person) because parents are too busy to take the time to read to their kids.

Kids(and adults too) watch TV and are bombarded by new images and ads, etc. every 30 seconds. The mind adapts what it is exposed to, so it's only natural that short attention spans would come out of a "right now" way of life that is spreading throughout the world. Granted...technological advances provide a ton of great benefits and have improved life greatly in many respects, but with the good comes the bad.

I have a pretty short attention span and I don't have it all figured out. I just wish I could think of ways to counterract the effects of "right now" thinking. Read a book or something? Smile

Sorry for the rambling.

I don't know if I really see a problem with it- the world's changing in ways that require a shorter, more intense concentration span and people are adapting themselves in the same way.

When I watch my Dad try and install a piece of software or work out how to use a new piece of electronics I'm amazed he ever gets anything done it takes so long.

Not long enough to juxtapose the words "starfish" and "Richard Gere", I'll wager.
