can someone give me a ballpark figure on what I'd have to shell out for a MRI on my lower arm or shoulder for e.g?
I am on the National Health Plan but I'm sure it doesn't cover the entire cost of a MRI, if even any. |

In Daegu, some friends and myself have had them done from 300-500,000. |

My friend just had his knees done at a major hospital where his wife gets a 50% employee discount, and for both knees, he paid 750,000k. I don't know much about MRI's but apparently there are different types available, and he had the more expensive one.
Warmachine must have a good place - his numbers seem a bit low, but they're definitely in the ballpark. |

You're really starting to push the limits of the actual cost of an MRI. I doubt you'd find it much cheaper elsewhere, but good luck in your search.
Also, have you considered if you really NEED an MRI? There is a lot of radiation involved and it's recommended that people avoid MRI's unless absolutely necessary. If you have time to shop around for one, you may want to ask yourself if it's really necessary to get.
Just a thought. |

There is no radiations emitted in an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). I think your thinkig about a CT scan.
How can you go to Thailand and do an MRI for less than 500,000? His friend had both knees done. That's why was so expensive. The clinic in Gyeongsan, where I live, did my spine x-ray and MRI was 350,000. If your anywhere near a train station you could jump on a train to Gyeongsan and come to this clinic. |

My mistake, you are correct - CT's are the ones that one needs to be careful about. |

My girlfriend got a brain CT and MRI at Saint Vincent's. The CT cost 150-200 and the MRi costs somewhere between 300-500 I think. I'll ask later. |

yah, I'm not going to fly to Thailand just for the MRI, but I may be there during summer vacation and if so, then it'd make sense to have it done there. Looks like the price there is around 300 USD.
if it's 300K in Korea, that'd be ok, but 500 would be pushing it bigtime.
Also, shouldn't I get some sort of discount, by virtue of being part of the NHS? The thai price is no insurance/discount, money out of pocket price.
I have some minor but annoying aches and pains that can probably only be answered by an MRI |

i had one done in severance hospital in 2009 and it cost more than 1 million.
969,500 for the MRI then i had to pay fees for 2 chats with the neurologist or whoever it was.
i do know that severance charge foreigners extra if you go through the international health clinic though. |

Umm....
yes, the cost of an MRI is about the same in Thailand as it is in Korea (about 350k won for either a "rotator cuff" or the knee for an ACL.
NO, there is NO significant radiation from an MRI (it is just a big magnet) and you are NOT blasted by x-rays or gamma rays; you are just put into a magnetic field (same as the earth's magnetic field).
You get a worse dose of radiation sitting in front of a CRT monitor or TV *(again a cathode ray tube).

Am I missing something?
I hit my head last May and with the Korean insurance it was 70,000krw including an X-Ray, CT, and the usual shot-in-the-butt!
MRI can't be thaaaat much here! |

I got mine done for 450,000 at himchan hospital in Seoul. Remember that cheaper doesn't necessarily mean best, as quality for mri's can vary enormously. I was quote 750,000 at Yonsei 'the first and the best'. It would be cheaper in Japan. |

I would be really interested to know why this is.
Incidentally, I had to go there each time for my prescription and each time they tried to charge me the consultation fee which I had already paid. |
