|
|
I was pondering this literally just a moment ago. What do you do after that very first year of teaching in Korea?
I'm guessing that most people return to the US or Canada or one of the other 5 or 6 English-speaking countries that Korea draws its teachers from. Or maybe you decide to stay on for another year? Or perhaps look for a better paying gig but stay in Korea? Or go to Japan? Or use your savings to start a surf shop on the beaches of Thailand or something and bum out for life?
Just wondering, because I don't think I intend to teach forever. I know life rarely goes according to plan, but I drew out something of a gameplan where I saw myself teaching for at most 2-3 years and then moving back to the US to settle down, find a job that I don't hate, get married 2-4 years after that and raise a family. But then again, I could get hit by a car in downtown Seoul by a very pretty lady who I fall deeply in love with and decide to stay and live with her forever only to discover she is the heiress to a colossal fortune and that I was the first person who loved her for who she was and not her money and we sail off into the sunset on her megayacht!
or i could just cut down on k-dramas for awhile...
what about you guys? |

Everybody has different ideas of what works for them, what they enjoy, what they don't like, where and what is fun.
So there's no point asking if it's better to stay in Korea after one year or go home. Because we would all experience those two options differently. |

One thing I am not going to do is leave this place and then look back at any woman I liked but didn't attempt to meet. I make the most of every opportunity.
Other than that I think I'll just live with mom and dad for awhile and figure out what I am going to do next. |

Korea has been good to me (see above), but this is true. We leave on a regular basis. I should add that my husband is not Korean. OP, when we finish, we won't stay here, but I will end up being a permanent expat, almost certainly. |

5 more months for me. I'm really beginning to miss home and family. I took so much things for granted back home. My original plan was to stay 2-3 years but after what happened. I knew that was impossible for me. I would go crazy my second year. |

| My first stint in Korea I did not save much money. I took trips outside the country every time I had at least 4 days off and did weekend trips within Korea almost every month. Blew my pension and bonus on 4 months of traveling and a few months back home. Came back and set a budget. Took less trips. I had to leave early but had enough saved to go back and finish my teaching credential. Had a baby. When he gets a little bigger I would like to teach abroad again. With a masters and a credential I figure I'll have more opportunities. |

One bad experience with a coworker that could have been avoided with a tiny bit of discretion on your part (aka a learning experience that could have happened in any country) and you're ready to leave this country for good?
I mean, I don't like it much here, but that is such a small thing. Just change jobs. You're on an F visa right? Easy as pie for you. |

No I really want to go home. I just realize teaching is not for me. Beside, my parents said there's an accounting job lined up for me back home. |
