				| I am currently in South Korea on a tourist visa. I am in the process of finding a teaching position and a recruiter I have been in contact with recently sent me this email in regards to getting an E2 visa:
Recruiter: So, we have spoken to immigration on your behalf.
We have a nice school in central Daegu interested in you.
However, the only way that you will be able to process your E2 visa is by returning back home and doing it from there.
Immigration has cancelled visa runs to Japan and degree verification until further notice.
Please let us know asap if you are willing to do this. We have to let the school know.
This will be the ONLY way for you to work legally in Korea.

To which I responded:I understand not being able to go to Japan for the visa; however, can I go to Hong Kong? This would be much more feasible in terms of time and money than flying back to the U.S.

Recruiter's response: This is a really good school, and the director said they would be happy to interview you in person if you will be returning home to process.
I know its a pain, but it is the bureaucratic process. There is no way around it.
We spoke to immigration and tried.. but there is no other option.

I have done some internet searching and have not found any information supporting the recruiters claim. I also called the immigration office here in Korea and although I think we had some communication disconnect the person I was speaking with said I just needed to go to a Korean Embassy or Consulate abroad. Has anyone else heard of new rules requiring applicants to return to their native country to get an E2 visa?

				| Is this your first E-2?
If so, they yes, you must return to your home country to interview at the consulate. The only exception I can think of is for Americans, we can go to Guam and finish the process IIRC.

If it is not your first rodeo, they are blowing smoke.

				| Yes, it is my first. But I am American so I'll check out the Guam option. Thank you. | |

 NOTHING is canceled.

The OP can't do Japan because he hasn't had a previous E2. He has to do either the USA or Guam.

IF you have had a previous E2 then you can do your visa run to Japan, overnight service.
