I've been living in Anyang for about six weeks, all without a legit internet setup. I'm sometimes able to get wireless, but that's a bit spotty and I'd like to get a proper hookup.

With that in mind, does anyone know how I can get some English-speaking help setting it up? One of my co-workers gave me a phone number that was supposed to be an English line for SK, but it didn't work for me.

I've also heard that some providers are unwilling to do single year contracts or month-to-month deals. I'm going to be here for about 11 more months, so either a one-year or a monthly setup would work for me.

Also, unrelated:
I get terrible cell phone service in my apartment. It isn't bad in the building itself (hallways, etc.), but in my room I get virtually no service, such that I can't answer a phone call. I've heard that you can call the cell provider (I have SK) and they can do something to improve your service. Any idea?

Thanks, all

I can recommended KT Olleh for a painless and helpful English setup. The lady on the phone spoke excellent English and could handle any of my basic account related questions. I've set up my line as a month-to-month account with a direct deduction out of my account. Couldn't really be any easier.

Unfortunately, I can't for the life of me remember the phone number, but one of your Korean co-workers should be able to quickly find it (somewhat counter-productive that a English speaking phone line can't be found by an English speaker).

However, my experience with Korean ISPs is that technical issues are not likely to be handled well. For example, when my internet was setup, the two techs attempted to use a flash based speed tester and ticketing system (that surprise, surprise, only worked in Internet Explorer). Personally, I would have thought just a test wget download off a local KT server would have more than adequately shown the line speed - but it's apparently no substitute for a pseudo speedometer and loads of flash Smile

In this sense, any technical issues that you encounter you will probably have to try and resolve yourself. Not to worry though, that's hopefully part of the reason for these forums.

Having said that, my connection has been reliable (although subject to a general Korean slow-down as debated on other threads here).

Does KT Olleh do cable tv setups too? I'd like to get a cable tv + internet package set up if possible, to keep things simple. I'm not in Korea just yet so thanks for any info.

I finally called KT this morning about getting my internet set up, and it couldn't have been easier. I got to speak to someone right away, she spoke good English, and they will be coming by my place this weekend to hook me up.

They requested a couple pieces of information over the phone: your ARC number, your address (obviously), and your bank account info, if you want to get a direct deduction set up. You also have to e-mail or fax a copy of your ARC card.

Many thanks for passing that number along, it will be nice to actually be connected to the world again.

Sure - I guess they would. I've never looked into it as I don't speak Korean and have little need of a few channels in English. It maybe actually be delivered as IPTV in some cases, but someone more knowledgeable could hopefully advise on this.
