Can anyone recommend budget accommodation in central Shanghai? I like the idea of an outside courtyard for relaxing. Has anyone stayed here....

Mingtown-etour-youth-hostel:

or the Phoenix backpackers:
http://www.hostelbookers.com/property/index.cfm?fuseaction=propertyDynamic.overview&intpropertyID=43810&strArrivalDate=2011-04-22&intNights=7

Any advice on the best things to see and do in Shanghai would be appreciated, we'll have 7 nights there.(Yes tried search function-no joy.)

Also do I have to get my travel visa through an agent? THanks Very Happy

7 days is a bit much for shanghai. you got the bund and the old town and then also the french concession. an interesting mosque too. you could see all of that in 2-3 days. i'd make several day trips:

a canal city (several to choose from)
hangzhou
and
suzhou

try wikitravel

Hey, I lived in Shanghai for a couple of years. If you're looking for something affordable and basically like a small Inn (think Holiday Inn US style...Holiday Inn in China is NOT affordable...but much nicer than the US equivalent), then you should check out 7days Inn. I believe that just before the Expo, rooms were about 300-400 RMB per night (50,000-70,000 KW). The one in Shanghai is located in Pudong (not the best location), but if it's just for sleeping then not so bad. Most of the places to hang out are located in Puxi and there may be a couple located in that area (7Days Inn is a Chain and the prices are standardized throughout China..including BJ).

www.7daysinn.com is the website. The card that I have is for Beijing so you should check the site for the appropriate number.

i'd check out the martial arts acrobat show. that was fun.

7 days is a bit too long for shanghai. i'd definitely take a bus down to hangzhou. should only be about 3 hours. hangzhou was my fav city in china.
