|
|
I have some heavy things I want brought home with me (a desktop computer and a bunch of books). I'm thinking of mailing them home instead of paying fees a bunch of fees to check them on the plane.
When mailing items by boat:
1. How much did it typically cost?
2. How long did it take?
3. Did you get the boxes for shipping at the post office? If so, how much were they? |

The largest boxes are the #6 box and takes up to 20kg. The price and time it takes to deliver (I assume) depends on where you are sending it.
My #6 boxes cost about 40,000 won and take 2 months to deliver. THe actual boxes only cost about 1,700 won? |

Thanks wormholes101.
Can boxes be found at any post office, or does each office differ as to what boxes they have to offer? |

| S far as I am aware, the boxes are standard to all post offices. |

Do be aware that you can only send up to a #5 box to some countries.
The max weight is still the same - 20kg per box.
Postage is based on weight so it won't matter if you send 2 or 4 boxes to get it done.

| I sent all my clothes and books home last year before my trip to SE Asia - 5 boxes, about 30k each, took 6 weeks to get from Korea to my house in Canada. All in excellent condition. It's a great, cheap option if you don't need the contents right away! |

I just read in another thread that you can no longer send things surface/boat to the US(mainland) from the Korean Post office since the USPS will no longer accept them.
Anyone know if this is true? |

What countries can't you send a #6 box to? Please don't tell me it's the US, because I just packed two #6 boxes last night. |

Unless something has recently changed, the maximum size box (that the post office sells) going to zones 3 and 4 are a #5 (and that includes Canada and the US). You can actually send a bit bigger but the limit is smaller than a #6.
You can try to send #6 boxes but don't be surprised if they refuse it and make you repack.

I returned to my local post office today to inquire. No one can speak a lick of English, but I made it clear I wanted to send a #6 to Meegook and there seemed to be no problem with that as they just said, "Nay, nay," and obviously remembered me buying 2 of the #6 boxes last week already knowing I'm American from meeting and asking me before. Well, it's a small town of a city around here in Seosan where most locals you do business with keep up with where you are from and why you are here. I'll try to ship it next Monday or Tuesday and let you know if #6 are OK. Could it be that you can't air ship a #6 to zone 3? |

I have sent two #6 boxes home to NZ lately and they cost me in total 70 000 won for surface mail....
I have sent many boxes home in the past, and they say it takes 2 months.... but its usually home in 4-6 weeks....I have not had any boxes go astray...
I'm about to send my final #6 home...
btw for the #6 box it costs 1,560 won
also as a previous poster said....there are some countries that can only have a #5 or smaller sent....so make sure you ask |

You have been a huge help so I do not mean to criticize you. Where did you find this out? A postal clerk made this rule up when you tried to ship a #6 box? The postal clerk I used didn't know about this rule so my #6 box will be stopped?
I successfully sent a #6 box to the US today for 48,000 won. As long as you don't do something like make a giant box out of 2 boxes and you use their boxes, the size should be OK. I still never seen anything about the max parcel size allowed. It's much like non-US based airlines saying 20KG is the max weight for check on baggage, but not indicating anywhere about the size and number of pieces allowed. |

Maybe put some Bounce or vacuum seal the clothes as they can get pretty musty after 2 long months. Back on topic, I've found the postal rules to be arbitrary. One security guard told me that I must buy KR Post boxes to mail home or my country's customs will destroy the package (it was packed in Shin Ramyeon boxes). She said it wasn't Shin Ramyeon inside but other things. I just nodded, agreed and proceeded to post them anyway. All I had inside were my old, used stuff and nothing contraband.
Meanwhile, another post office just took my stuff and mailed it home (even when they were inside grocery boxes). |

I noticed how some people arbitrarily makes up their own rules at work when they feel either judgmental or confused needing some direction. Now if only they had the light green colored address customs forms at the boxing table, it'd be smooth sailing. I filled out an EMS customs form, told it would be 168,000, explained for 5 minutes what surface mail is, and then finally was handed a surface mail form. Guess not very many people use these so they don't put them out. It's mistakes like this that make things so awkward where I'm standing there thinking, "boy I hope she doesn't get impatient with me and decide to give me a hard way to go instead," because I could tell it ticked her off a little when I needed to take twice the time it should had taken. If my #6 box makes it, I will be thrilled. |
