I complete my contract with a large hagwon chain in just over 4 months. My school says I will not be paid my last month's pay, severance and security deposit until September 10 (around 4.8 million won). My contract finishes on August 31, so that will be 9 days after I have left Korea. They say they will send it to my foreign bank account.
Should I be worried about this? I have looked at my contract and it says I will be paid those things "upon completion of the contract". Is it normal to go home and then receive what you are owed? Would it be difficult to get what I'm owed if I go home and they do not pay it? |

That is prety normal.
Maybe if you know someone who already left and went back home, you can ask them if they received the money they were due. |

I've worked at four different hagwons since 2005, in three different provinces, and I've always received my last pay, severance, and security deposit before leaving Korea. My employer would bring me into their office on the Thursday of my last week, and we'd figure out how much my last pay would be (last pay + severance + security deposit with bills for the last month deducted). The final amount would then be deposited into my Korean bank account that very day, so I could wire the funds to my account back home.
The pension is another story. You go to the pension office and fill out the forms, and the refund is wired to your account back home a couple of weeks later.
Your school might just do things differently, but this is the first time I've heard of a school doing it like this. I personally wouldn't be comfortable with it, but like movybuf says, if past teachers haven't had any problems, then it's probably all right. Best to check though. |

I wouldn't be too thrilled about the idea. But it is hopefully fine.
What does your contract say about it?
Any other teachers quitting before you or can you get in touch with old teachers by any chance? |

If you can confirm from other teachers who have left the school that they have received their final pay in full (like, former colleagues), then you're probably fine.
If not, I would hang out in Korea as a tourist for a few days just to make sure... |

Here's my take on it.
You have to wait for the pension. You can have it sent to your Korean account or one in your home country. I have it set up so I can transfer from my Korean account to an account at home. Check your bank now about this. Don't wait till the last minute.
The other stuff, don't leave the school until you get it. Now is a good time to decide of you want to leave or not. Just tell them you are willing to wait for the pension but everything else must be paid before you leave.
My reasoning is as follows. They have to give you a flight home, and this flight has to be paid for. There is no way you can fly back home unless you are using your money or they pay. It is their responsibility in the end, and they should do the same with severance if you finished.
There is no reason to wait. I would gladly quit if they don't pay before I leave. |

Go to Immigration--or do it online at hikorea--and have your sojourn extended by a few weeks (costs you nothing). That's a big chunk of change. Stay until you get your money. They have to buy your ticket back, but they can't dictate WHEN you leave; nothing stopping you from staying a few extra days. |

| I agree with the other posters, however, legally they can have 2 weeks to pay your severance money after you finish your contract. Your last months pay I would definitely get before I left the hogwon. |
