I'm sure most of you agree that the Incheon airport is head and shoulders above that in Gimpo, but the latter is closer to the city and thus a bit more convenient. I figure the closer flights like those to Taiwan, China, the Phils and Japan could be handled by the Gimpo airport.

The following article says more international flights to the Gimpo airport could undermine the Incheon airport's status as a hub airport.

I've always preferrd Gimpo.

An airport is an airport, and the larger incovenience is getting to and from one, rather than finding things to do at one.

Incheon is so over-rated as well.

I wouldn't say Incheon is so overrated but it's pretty darn far from Seoul.

This 'hub airport strategy' does not aim passengers who originate/terminate their international flights in Korea. Rather, the 'concern' addresses potential loss of demands among those who simply transfer in Seoul just because they're flying between Asia and Americas/Oceania, etc. on a Korean airliner.
By diverting short-haul international flights from ICN to GMP, which might enhance convenience of those coming to/leaving Seoul, it makes it virtually impractical for any transfer passenger to go back and forth between ICN and GMP.
Korean carriers have been vacuuming up the demand of Japanese passengers from small cities precisely because it has been darn tiresome for them to travel between Haneda and Narita, whilst a single stop at ICN makes it way easier for them.
