Where else have you taught that your experiences were worse than Korea? I ain't saying that Korea is awful but with all the negativity here (justified or not) I'm just curious about other places where it was the pits.

Taiwan and Mozambique.
Taiwan I didn't like the climate, scooters and larger classes.
Mozambique is a beautiful but perilous place. I had an armed guard of 2 soldiers and nearly died of malaria. Before finally getting out of there about 20 kg lighter than when I arrived after subsisting on a diet of lentils. (Shortage of meat due to widespread foot + mouth disease.).

So overall I'd say Korea really isn't so bad^^.

Just from visiting Taiwan, I'd say yeah...the climate probably would have murdered me unless I had a scooter, and I'd really rather not have a scooter. Still, I hear a lot about the friendliness of the people..

From a job standpoint, Japan could be much worse than Korea. Just check out "dispatch" companies for public schools, such as Interac. Complaints for the public school system outside of "JET" far outmatch any whining those in EPIK/GEPIK/SMOE do.

I like the people I know here and my job, but aesthetically, it's by far the worst place I've ever been to. And that includes Taiwan. Even in South East Asia you get palm trees, picturesque villages and lush jungle in between the horrible stark concrete blocks but here you just get high rocks covered in trees and factory farming. Visually, the cities and vast majority of towns are hideous.

China in '95/96. Pollution so bad you couldn't see the top of the tv tower, black water in the lakes and rivers, burning garbage, 50 students/class, the most awful textbooks you can ever imagine, etc. However, nothing compared to the food. I was sick most days because of it. Hence, I have never ate Chinese food since then.

How come you were there? Who paid for the guards? Sounds interesting!

Happy Valley-Goose Bay seemed nice during the 3 weeks I was there visiting my fiance. But, the Inuit from the reserve in Sheshashit who'd come into town from Thursday to Sunday and act nutty left me feeling a bit anxious.

Taiwan and Guangzhou City in the Chinas are ugly as sin and full of people with even worse manners than many of the locals here. Korea is, in my opinion, a much more attractive place than those two places.

Basically my experience in China for a year summed up to a T. And that was only as far back as 2006. I'm sure things have changed in the cities but there are still a lot of places that are like the above.

Seoul is great compared to some of the hell holes I lived in. I was also expecting the pollution and garbage to be horrible and it really isn't that bad. It isn't great but it could be so much worse than this. Hazy humid summer days in Toronto have smog that is just as bad if not worse.

I didn't like Costa Rica much. It has beautiful nature but the crime is bad and the pay is terrible. There's also so many tourists that you don't get the usual locals who are interested to meet foreigners. I guess that can be an advantage but then when you're trying to meet people it's difficult. I've never lived in a place where I had such a bad social life. It constantly rains too.

This isn't from teaching experiences but some places that are far worse than Korea are:

Newark
Halifax, NS or any of its trashy suburbs
Any council estate in Great Britain
Downtown Eastside of Vancouver
Industrial Cape Breton
Detroit

Hell, 75% of the world is probably worse than South Korea.... Where else can I see Big Bang and Super Junior in concert most months out of the year?

Anyway, Korea's cool and teaching kids here is cool. Whenever I walked into the building I felt like Elvis Presley with all the kids yelling my name.
