Went on a hike last Saturday on the mountain (hill) behind my house with my wife, a friend and his girlfriend. As we hiked I decided to pick up garbage as I went. I like the mountains but don't like the habit over here of people littering in nature, partly for environmental reasons and partly because it just plain makes a beautiful place ugly. Anyway, an older Korean man seemed to like what I was doing, said in Korean that he was either embarrassed (or ashamed, not great at Korean) because a foreigner was picking up while many Koreans litter. He even went so far as to get up off his bench and join in picking up garbage and putting it in my bag. Other groups applauded and a few were just a bit confused about it.
Anyway, I thought that maybe if enough of us foreigners did this while hiking maybe it would catch on more broadly in the Korean hiking scene, since it could become an issue of losing face to them, so I made a facebook site called Garbage Hikers, and my wife translated the title into Korean for me. The same type of prelude story as above is on the facebook group and my wife is gonna translate that for me as well.
Anyway, for any of you hiking enthusiasts who are interested, the facebook group is here at www.facebook.com/pages/Korean-Garbage-Hikers-한국-쓰레기-줍기-등산모임/204624459560092 |
