First of all, are they necessary?

I was told that things like hair dryers, flat irons, curling irons, iPod speaks, etc. will likely be destroyed if you use a plain old converter.

Secondly, if I am going to get a transformer, what kind should I get? A quick look on ebay revealed they range from 100 watts to 2,000 watts. I have no idea how any of this works, or what would be sufficient for a flat iron/curling iron/other girly things.

Was also horrified to see that the transformers with the large wattage could weigh up to 20 lbs!!

DON'T bring it with you. Get one here.

For most of your "appliances" it is easier and cheaper to just replace them once you get here rather than deal with the voltage differences and transformers and stuff.

To work out HOW BIG a transformer you need, look at the labels on your electric appliances. On the label it should have the "wattage" listed (750-1500 watts for a blow dryer as an example.) Make sure the size you get is large enough to handle the largest item you plan to use.

side notes:

Are they necessary? If your item is NOT rated for dual voltage (ie: 110-240VAC) then a transformer IS necessary or you WILL burn out your item in about 15 seconds.

Most (if not all) laptops, electronics, chargers, etc. are now rated dual voltage (confirm by reading the label before you plug it in).
