we should have a link to a sight with pics of people stupid enough to pay off their student loans. I bet it would look like the cast of revenge of the nerds.

This will be the next financial crisis in America. Spiraling student loan debt and high unemployment is a recipie for disaster.

100% debt free here. I feel sorry for the kids that have to go to University today and in the future. It will just continue to get more expensive year after year. Hopefully, people will start to see how much of a scam the whole college thing is. But considering the sheeple and how they think, probably not.

I am doing a savings program that will amture when my daughter is 18. It will be 50 grand. I wonder if that will be enough, even if she is living at home with us. Probably not.

Enough for what? First year of college? Maybe. If you're smart you would park your money into hard physical assets such as like silver and gold. Hold them until your daughter turns 18. By then when fiat currency around the world collapses, gold and silver will reach parabolic level. You'll be able to pay off her college tuition with just 1oz of gold.

Well in 1997 1 year of uni in Canada was about $3000. $4000 4 years later. I am guessing 15-17 grand a year in 15 years.

I am not buying those scare tactic horror stories. I buy silver but I dont have as high of hopes as you do.

I'm curious as to why you see this as stupid.. I think of it as responsible. I, personally, pay mine so that my parents will not be targeted. Good ole Sallie Mae wants her money and will do what it takes to get it. I know it's a RIDICULOUS amount of money that the students in the US are paying for an education, but it's not right to simply not pay back what we've promised to.

I agree. If I would have defaulted on my loans, they would have started hassling my folks. Though I didn't make regular payments, over the course of 6 years I sent large lump sums and finally got rid of it 4 years ago.

I'm just amazed that people TAKE student loans. Getting some sort of education beyond high school is important, yes. But if you don't have the money for ivy league/private university, that's what community college and state universities are for. Save up, work during school, it's easily doable.

I'm not saying that loans are a bad idea, but the way people jump all over them as opposed to taking other options amazes me.

DD, two choices. One, college is not worth the money, so don't take the loan. Two, college is worth the money, so take the loan and pay it back. There is NO argument to be made that paying back what you owe is stupid. No one forced you to take a loan, no one forced you to go to college, no one forced you to spend 10+ years drinking in college letting the loans add up, etc.

I paid interest during school, but I also did my 4 year degree in 3 years, so working full time wasn't an option. But I know what you mean.. so many people I went to school with just took out the max amount each semester and figured that they'd live like kings (nice apartments, going out all the time, etc.) and not have to worry about it until later. I do sort of kick myself when I consider that I could have just gone to the state schools I got accepted to (instead of the twice as expensive art college). But I know that the instruction I received from my professors along with the small class sizes and plenty of one-on-one sessions is worth it in the long run. TESL isn't just to pay back student loans, but the loans sure were a part of my decision.
