http://koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2011/04/117_85588.html

I would rather go to prison and do my time behind bars than serve in the military. This is what Kang We-suck, a 26-year-old-man indicted for refusing to fulfill his military duty, said when asked about whether he would appeal to a higher court if a lower court rules in favor of the prosecution."

"Kang also made headlines across the country in 2004 when he was a high school senior at Daegwang High School. At the time, he refused to attend the schools chapel services on the grounds of religious freedom.

After being expelled, he filed a lawsuit against the school and the Seoul city government, seeking 50 million won in compensation. He was awarded 25 million won for damages inflicted on him by the high school."

^I like this guy already. If he represents the future generation of Korea. Then I have hope for this country Cool ......

More power to him. At least if he gets his wish, he'll probably have a lot more sex.

Nude protest...and a ridiculous photo of him pretending to be in jail. "This is where I will be for the next 2 years"...YUCK.

This guy is overdramatic and annoying.

He's looking for attention, and getting it.

I don't think that matters in prison. They'll probably do it just to wipe the smirk off his face.

Guy who fights for his rights vs Masses who submit meekly and do as told.

Yeah, he does sometimes come off as a pompous jack-ass, but when you're a high school senior and have the courage to take on the Seoul city government, and you win big time, your head is bound to inflate a few sizes.

I don't think Korean inmates in prisons roll that way. But they probably will beat him senseless for being a draft dodger.

Conscription is a joke anyways when deingwith such a smoke-and-mirrors military like North Korea. I predict that in the next 10 years you'll see lots of youth protests and bills being presented to kill conscription, mostly once Jung Il dies, which will be all fought tooth and nail by the old, feeble Koreans whose grandparents were in the war.

Are you saying that in ten years' time the only connection to the war will be the grandparents of those who are already old and feeble?

Sorry. I mean you ARE saying that, but is that what you mean?

Some of the vets I have met in Korea are in pretty good shape. And if you don't think they have good reason to be a little distrustful of their northern brethren, google some Yeonpyeong-do, Cheonan-ham or just a general rundown of the capabilities of nuclear weapons.

If the Korean government came up with some kind of civil service alternative to hoisting arms (which I think it should) then the allotted time should be a fair percentage longer than those who take up the gun.

To my knowledge this already exists. My school had a computer tech intern who was basically doing his military service. I believe it was 3 years instead of 2.

It's mostly for those guys who are too out of shape or feeble to serve in the military. I'd imagine you could choose it as well.

You can join the police too. I think that's 2.5 years.

Nukeday: as you say, it exists but only for those with some kind of physical problem. I am pretty sure that healthy Jehovahs Witnesses end up spending three years in prison.

I do not believe there is an option for the hale and hearty men. This was told to me be a prof whose son was in jail because as a Witness he cannot pick up a weapon.

The North is a joke. I remember reading from a third party that their military arms have been estimated at being up to 90% unusable. They can't even make one rocket fly right. They can't sustain a ground operation for more than 2 weeks due to running out of provisions and more importantly, gas. Going to war would be futile and they know it. It would destroy their country, already plagued with continuing famine and lack of proper supplies. Hell, the water only runs for about an hour a day and the power in the capital city shuts off every few hours. Simply put, North Korea is a hollow shell of a country held together by mass brainwashing and arrogance.

But I don't need to tell anyone this, everyone knows it. Only fear mongering fools still think that the war is still going on. The South won, it's obvious to everyone, even the North. It's a testament to Korean face-saving and Chinese/Russian enslavement that they refuse to concede. Nowadays the South Korean military is more about Confucian system control and the military industrial complex. Going through pointless military training has been done because your father did it and his father did it, etc. etc. It's just another processing system in a country full of system. This generation of 20 somethings has been the first to live in first-world prosperity and they know there's no point in going to waste 2 years pretending to get ready for a fight that will never come, I talk to college-aged students all the time who agree. One of my best friends is a Gyopo and is getting a Ph. D because he knows it's a joke to join the military. Think about how much better this country would be if half of the population had an extra 2 years to work on their careers, hopes, dreams, whatever.

RMNC: say what you will about the technical abilities of the north Korean army and I will probably agree with you. If, however, you can successfully predict the outcome of the antagonism of a giant state-machine that is nurtured on hatred...well, send me a newsletter.

I do not chuckle at a one million men marching down on me. Even were they equipped with tennis rackets.
