Since April, Seouls city government has been running a program that employs 100 expatriates in Seoul to teach the culture and history of their homelands to students attending elementary schools, in an effort to help young Koreans start to learn about the very wide world of different cultures |

Starting from 2009, Seouls city government has held around 100 of the classes in elementary schools at the rate of about 20 classes per month.
We held 79 classes last year and are planning to hold more than 100 classes this year, Jung Young-hwan, an official at the Foreign Residents Assistance Division of the Seoul city government said. Most of the teachers are attending universities in Seoul.
About 100 expatriates and 200 schools applied for the program this year. Most teachers get the chance to teach more than one class, depending on their schedules and the schools. They are paid 30,000 won ($27) per class.
In an aim to improve quality of the classes, Jung said, we are thinking of asking some of the more popular foreign teachers to work as regular teachers, paying them about 130,000 won ($119) per class, the minimum wage for professional teachers.
