Hello!
I was wondering if anyone has any information regarding a school called "ANHIL ENGLISH SCHOOL" in Ulsan South Korea?
Maybe I didn't get the name correct?
My friend is going to teach there very soon and I just want some tips or opinions on the status of this insitute.
Thank you! |

If "your friend" is "going to teach there very soon", isn't it a bit late to be asking about it? If you want to know if there's a billiard bar nearby so he can bring his pool cue, I understand. But if you want to know if it should be avoided, what's the point if his decision has already been made? Do you just want people to tell you that it's a great place and reassure you that he'll have a good time? I'm sorry, but I don't get it.. |

First of all, SHE does not play pool.
Second of all, she got this job very quickly and, as a friend, I am just trying to find out any helpful information regarding Ahil English School.
I am sorry if you do not understand this, but if you don't want to give any tips or advice, why bother answering my posting at all? *I don't get it*
Anyway for any people reading this who actually care about being helpful and not rude and sarcastic, I read in a TESL book the other day that Ahil was a good school and had honest employers. Which is good news!

THIS IS WRITTEN IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST OF THE ESL COMMUNITY. If it's Ahil English School in Nammok, Dong-Gu, Ulsan, then your friend should bail out before it's too late. I noted the posting date of 2003, but I will reply anyway in case it's a system error, because if I can spare anyone the hell Ahil put me through, it's worth my time.
Search it on Google.com.
It is not near a beach, those running it are deceitful, the teaching program is extremely teacher-driven, very little emphasis on conversation. Medical insurance and pension premiums will be deducted from the teacher's paycheck but not remitted to the insurance and pension offices. If your friend gets sick, it'll be pay out of pocket or die in the filthy moldy quarters assigned to foreign teachers.
Foreign teachers are played off against each other.
Those operating Ahil have powerful friends that ruthlessly pursue anyone who tries to warn other teachers about Ahil.
Those recommending it are teachers turned recruiters well paid to whitewash Ahil.
If your friend is not yet in Ulsan, then it's not too late to back out. I considered backing out, but felt obligated since I had already signed a contract, a contract the school totally ignored. I lived to regret it. In the three months I worked there, I was one of 5 teachers who walked out. Teaching in South Korea can be a Great experience if you sign up with a reputable school. If you wind up in a place like Ahil, you will go away with the impression that all Koreans are cruel and dishonest racists and, I did know some wonderful people in Korea, just not at Ahil.

Considering this thread is 8 years old, I think it's safe to say they already got there.
Now post your review on esllist.com and move on! |

Hi there Anet!!
I was wonderin what had happened to you since I haven't received Xmas greetings from you for some time.
And Kris!! Where did he get off to? It's like he fell off the side of the planet.
You say that you 'walked out' of Ahil. I had thought that they fired you whilst you were helpless on your back in hospital, the tyrannical so and so's!!!
Would love to hear from Kris again!! |

My posting was not intended to discuss the case. It was intended to warn native English teachers. In my haste to protect foreign teachers from the hell Ahil put me through, I did not write clearly. On the day I arrived at Ahil Maria walked out after teaching only a few weeks. Ms. Park claimed that she had taken money and disappeared. Maria returned the next day to clean out her apartment and write a farewell message to other teachers. She had neither disappeared nor taken money. She had stormed out following a dispute with Ms. Park.
About a week after I started, Chad left, two or three months into his contract.
At the end of June, an American couple arrived. They were gone by the end of October.
About three weeks after I started, Tamara completed her 12 months, was asked to extend and refused to stay - not another day.
Technically we could say that, I too, had walked out because I left to check into the hospital. I had been begging for two weeks for medical attention to an illness likely caused by Ahil's environment. When I left to get this medical attention, I was on the verge of kidney failure. By the grace of God, a kidney specialist and his team worked seven days a week to diagnose me. Then they administered a cocktail of chemicals intravenously for three days and the MPA was thrown into remission. A week later, though still recovering, I was well enough to teach. I checked out on the Friday and reported for work on the Monday. Ms. Park surprised me with the news that I had been replaced. She never talked to the doctor. She had not communicated with me. In violation of her employment contract with me, she had terminated my services without warning and without notice. Sam was available for up to one month to cover for me but while I was in the hospital, Ahil had a chance to employ a young attractive American and simply brushed me aside without any warning or notice.
The facts are on record at Ulsan University Hospital and I have a copy of my medicals records.
Do not be mislead by Ahil and its well paid friends. There are plenty of great opportunities in Korea. Pass this one up. |

Now Anet, you have often spoken of your devotion to the church. Isn't it time to forgive and forget, to move on? What would Jesus want?
If you continue to hold ill-will and rancour in your heart to um Maria is it? Then next time a kidney problem is at hand God won't command the specialist and team to work seven days a week.
They'll have to do it all at their own behest! |
