Hello,

In countries like the United States, anyone can send an SMS to a mobile phone for free from their email client. Here are the instructions:

Quote:
In your browser, address an e-mail to the 10-digit cell phone number at the appropriate gateway. For instance, to send to an AT&T cell phone number, address the email to [email protected]. Here's a list of cell provider gateways -

AT&T: @txt.att.net
Alltel: @message.alltel.com
Cingular: @cingularme.com
Nextel: @messaging.nextel.com
Powertel: @ptel.net
Sprint: @messaging.sprintpcs.com
SunCom: @tms.suncom.com
T-Mobile: @tmomail.net
US Cellular: @email.uscc.net
Verizon: @vtext.com
Virgin Mobile: @vmobl.com

I would like to know if this can be done in Korea as well, and what the gateways are. Thanks.

This is kind of an old thread, but if you're still interested:

There's actually a much better way of texting to/from North America. Go to www.joopz.com and sign up for a free account. The service lets you text to most carriers in North America (a few smaller carriers such as Cricket may or may not work but the major ones like AT&T, Verizon, etc DO work).

The best part is that the person you're texting can respond and you can read their response right there online in real time!

As for texting online to/from Korean numbers, it's much harder. You can go to www.naver.com and type in "free sms." There's a way that you can log in with your Korean ID, BUT absolutely all the instructions on signing up for an account and using their system are 100% in Korean. There are no instructions anywhere in English. So, you'll need a Korean speaker with you to help you sign up for an account and get accustomed to the user interface until you can use it on your own. Also, the user cannot respond to you.

The way most Koreans now get around this is to have a smartphone such as an iphone or android phone. With these phones, there's this really popular free app called Kakao (make sure you spell it correctly). It allows users to set up free texting within their network (anyone who has the app on their iphone, ipod, ipad or android phone can use it). The nice thing about it is that it appears EXACTLY as a standard text. You can even set it up to make your phone vibrate when you receive a text (obviously, this doesn't happen on an ipod or ipad, but the idea is the same).

Kakao is almost unheard of in North America, but there are similar services.

I like one called Text Plus. Again, it works on iphones, ipads and ipods as well as android phones. You just sign up for a free account and log on. They also let you have a free virtual number in North America (you don't get to choose the area code - BUT, if you pay a few dollars, you CAN choose your area code). With this number, ANYONE in North America (whether or not they have this app installed on their phone - HINT: THEY NEEDN'T EVEN HAVE A SMART PHONE - JUST ANY PHONE THAT HAS TEXTING CAPABILITY) can text to you and you'll receive it on your iphone, ipod, ipad or android phone HERE IN KOREA!!!!

So, you see why I love this service so very much!

It even works on iPods? I have an iPod touch but don't have a smartphone anymore (lost a Galaxy S2).

Thanks for the incredible post by the way.

Textplus and Kakao both have iPhone apps which will easily run on your iPod and Joopz should work in your browser. So, yes.

Wink

And you're very welcome. I've spent quite a lot o time and money doing research into this very question.
