Hiya! I'm not yet in Korea, but I'm really hoping that I'll be able to head over there soon and start teaching.
However, being Type 1 diabetic, I've got a few concerns. I've been thinking that I'd try to get international insurance, but seeing as I've got a pre-existing condition, I don't know that i'd be able to do that. Has anyone found a company that will cover someone with a pre-existing condition under certain conditions (such as continuous prior coverage, etc)? If I don't go this route, will Korean National insurance cover supplies like insulin and pump supplies? or at least part of them?
Also, since I'm on a pump, will I be able to get pump supplies? do i have to order them in the US and have them sent?
I've seen some info here and there on the board, but I haven't been able to find anything specific that answers my questions. and if i won't be able to get supplies or insulin, i don't think i'll be able to do this, and I *really* want to do this!
Thanks in advance, y'all. |

PM me with the EXACT items that you have concern about. I will ask my partner, who is Korean, to find out from one of the local pharmacies what the costs are. I can tell you that things like this tend to be subsidized by National Health Insurance, but not covered outright.
Also, one suggestion, try to locate afternoon positions. From one diabetic to another, most employers are not terribly tolerant when it comes to taking time off from work for doctor's appointments. We diabetics have to have our conditions monitored by a doctor. So, in order to make it work, you really need to have your mornings free to go to the doctor. Another possibility would be an adult hagwon. They typically have a split shift, so you'd work in the early morning and again in the evening but have most of your daylight hours for errands such as doctor's appointments. An afternoon (aka "after school") position would, to most people, be preferable.
One other thing: I wouldn't tell your director about your diabetes. I made that mistake and now my director has refused to renew my contract. |
