If a person works a number of years in the academy system, and then decides they want to take a job at a public school, what happens to their years of academy teaching experience?

Is it looked down upon by the school administration?

Can it be used as leverage in salary negotiations?

It will usually get you a one level pay/grade bump.

Thanks for the quick response. Is it always a one level bump, or does the number of years ever change this?

that would be how well you could market yourself to the prospective school.
Most of the time, one year or five, means a 1 level (not level 1) pay bump.
TESOL cert? MA? these help also

K-12 school positions/scales are pretty much written in stone.
If you have "A" then you get "1"
If you have "A" + "B" then you get "2"
If you have "A" + "B" + "C" then you get "3".
etc.

Have a look and see where you are. They are public information.
