Why, oh why, do so many people go on Dave's for the sole purpose of being rude to others? I just don't understand it.

It's a fair observation, but starting a thread on it will just attract more rude/sarcastic comments, no? There are plenty of sources of info out there, so it might be an idea to search for a forum that is more your style. I have found a few. Having said that, there are more than a couple of people on here that offer genuinely useful info and insight into living on the ROK, so don't get too down on the forum.

to be fair, most posters on here aren't as bad as they may seem. dave's is kind of like a punching bag that people take their stress out on, so that they may appear normal in public.

Because they never think they'll have to deal with you face to face, so it
becomes easy..( little do they know though)..

It ALWAYS comes back at you.

Yeah, that's pretty good. Also, online personas, for various reasons, aren't often congruent with the face-to-face personalities of the same people.

People get away with saying and thinking things online that they would never dream of doing face-to-face. Pretty simple.

I agree with some of the other posters. It's the power of being anonymous. People say things on this forum that they would never say to people in person. A spirited debate can be fun, but sometimes people take it too far and it degenerates into name calling and insults. If the people involved were gathered in person, they would be less likely to become so aggressive. Also, I think that sometimes people vent their frustrations on this forum and other posters become unfortunate targets. Have you seen on here how bent out of shape people can get over a relatively benign topic? In some cases, being anonymous makes people comfortable enough to say exactly what they are thinking or they take on personas that are more confident and aggressive then they are in real life.

Of course, some people are just giant As in real life too and it comes across on this forum. It takes all kinds.

Because being nice all the time would be incredibly saccharine and insipid.

Well, I think there are a few reasons.

1. The problem of appropriately conveying emotions and/or humor in written text.

2. The fact that most people frankly aren't all that good at writing, so they have difficulty properly conveying their ideas which leads to frustration both for themselves and others.

3. I notice a tendency of posters getting defensive because they expect other people to fully understand their situations. All we know is what is written.

4. Being on the message board forces/allows you to interact with certain types of people you wouldn't normally talk or associate with in person.

5. A tendency to think that your opinion or view is unique or insightful.

6. People get angry when a poster makes an itemized list of answers and respond by lashing out at them.

7. Boredom.

It has do with Freedom of Speech.

I mean do you really think someone would post on here with an "assumed notion" of thier name and wherabouts?

I agree with this one. A lot of the time, the things people write on here which anger or annoy other people would be easily toelrated if spoken in the pub.
