Anyang Art Park is cool, as is the place in Paju with the cafes and galleries. |

If you don't know already there is a tourist bus service which connects up all
those sights. It is pretty well priced and you can get on and off at each place
all day and night. |

Suwon Folk Village... I know it's not "in" Seoul, but it's close enough. |

Insadong should defintely be on the list. Also near the city hall area there are some nice traditional folk village areas with old style guards outside of the entrance. Can't remember the name of that though. |

I have a friend coming to visit me later this month and here are things I'm going to do. I live in Jongno near Hyehwa and SKKU.
1. Walk up the mountain behind Sungkyunkwan university. It's not Bukahansan but close to it. It's very accessible through public trails and is never that crowded. It winds through the mountains just north of Seoul and you get absolutely stunning views.
2. DMZ tour for a day trip
3. Insadong during the day
4. Shopping probably in myeongdong/namdaemun/dongdaemun
5. War memorial museum
6. Korean barbecue followed by screen golf
7. Dragon Hill sauna near Yongsan (though he'll probably think its a gay idea so maybe not)
8. the big palace, not gyungbukgung, with all the hills and gardens and the lake and atrium
9. nightlife in hyehwa and maybe hongdae. might get down to gangnam but probably not. Oh yeah, Itaewon definitely.
10. Live Starcraft II tournament at the GomTV studio in Mokdong |

seoul doesn't have too many good sights, but there are plenty of fun things you can do.
a good galbi/samgyebsal night. try to find something a little out of the ordinary. there are a lot of good places in jongno. and now that the weather is good, finding a nice outdoor place is fun.
pojangmacha. gwangjang market (also in jongno) is a great place to experience this. lots and lots of stalls and it's always packed with people at night.
noraebang, but make sure you bring some fun friends. my parents weren't really into the whole karaoke thing, but if you have a good, big group of people it's a lot of fun.
a night in sincheon/hongdae or gangnam. i prefer the former, but avoid itaewon. i brought some friends to itaewon just to check out the area and we stopped somewhere for a pint. they thought it was weird and we left pretty quickly.
if you're going to do shopping, avoid the malls (coex/time's square). namdaemun and dongdaemun were the most interesting for people i've had here, but myeongdong is also worth it just for the crazy crowds.
insadong/gwanghwamun square/bukchon/samcheongdong/cheonggyecheon/and one of the nearby palaces is an entire day.
under king seongjong there's a hangul museum where they teach you to write your name in korean (all for free). it's kind of cheesy if you've been here awhile, but it's a nice free souvenir and you're already in the area.
the bukchon area north of anguk station is a really nice walk and samcheongdong is a great place to experience the whole cafe culture here (say what you will about it).
dmz is worth it, but make sure the tour you do includes the jsa. it's the main attraction.
namsan tower is alright, but the crowds can be insane when the weather is nice. do it during the week at night if you can.
the 63 building isn't worth going to if you do namsan. the view isn't nearly as impressive. yeouido park is great though and if you have a lazy afternoon, it's a good place to have a picnic. bring some local friends as it may be weird if it's just the two of you.
hike one of the mountains in seoul. there are a few and they all have their positives/negatives. none are all that strenuous.
baseball game at jamsil. even if you don't like baseball, it's fun to see the baseball culture here. mokdong stadium is kinda small and the local team is awful so the fans aren't as into it.
if you're gonna do a museum, the war memorial is probably best in the summer/spring as it has a lot of outdoor stuff to see.
rent a bike and ride along the han. the bike paths are awesome and the views are great around certain parts of the river.
noryangjin. if your friend doesn't like sushi, they also have soups. if they don't like fish, it's still worth a visit.
seoul might not have many good sights, but there are a lot of fun things you can do in the city. those kinds of experiences are always more memorable (at least for me) than seeing random sights. |
