I am going to be working in Korea until February 2012, but my passport expires January 2012.

I am currently in Canada on a little holiday between contracts and could renew it here, but then my visa wouldn't be in the new passport. Is this going to be an issue? When I signed another contract at the same school the immigration office only renewed the date on the ARC card, not the visa.

I'm thinking it would probably be easier to renew my passport in Korea? Unfortunately I don't live in Seoul, which makes things more difficult.

Not an issue.
Your ARC proves residence so the airline won't worry.
Your ARC proves you are registered so immigration won't worry.
You WILL have to register your new passport with Kimmi when you get back to Korea.

Depending on how long your "holiday" is you may not have time to get a new passport and return to Korea on time. You MAY need to do it after you return to Korea.

Pickup a new copy of your Birth Certificate while you are home. The lady at the Canadian embassy is kind of anal about them being in pristine condition when you apply for your new passport.

For real. I had a a few pen marks scratched on mine this December so I had to send away for a new one. This meant that I could only get a temporary passport issued, good for a whopping two years.
