Maybe I am a jerk on Dave's.

My grammar is not so great, but I can generally tell if something reads incorrectly. I see some really common mistakes here again and again. Yes, I know it is an internet forum...but we are teaching English, after all.

"Diffuse" instead of "defuse."

Lately, I seem to see "elude" for "allude" everywhere I look. The reason for the correct usage being so elusive eludes me.

discreet/discrete

regime/regimen/regiment

Shockingly, a certain poster here STILL gets their/thier wrong.

Loose/lose

Alot/ a lot

It annoys me when I see people using texting short hand instead of words. Things like, "U need 2 b...," etc. You're at a computer with unlimited space for words. Take an extra second and type them.

The worst I've ever seen was someone spelling the number one as 'w-o-n' and another poster spelling 'through' as 't-h-r-e-w'.....is it really possible they are college-educated English teachers?

I suppose they might not be. Anyone can sign up for Dave's.......some of our posters might be permanently drunk high-school drop outs living in Indiana trailer parks.

It's not a huge deal. Obviously people are typing quickly to get their point across and not editing as they go, but I have read some howlers on this site - which is, after all, about teaching English.
