That's what I read at the Marmot's Hole: http://www.rjkoehler.com/2006/12/01/look-mom-my-hagwon-english-teacher-is-an-overseas-porn-star/

Obviously something like that is difficult to detect--given the widespread adoption of wireless networks--and impossible to enforce. Or maybe he is referring just to minors surfing the Web for porn, I don't know.

I was browsing for porn the other day, and I stupidly encountered a rather insidious site whose script wouldn't allow me to close out of it or even my browser window (I later just used task manager to close down Firefox; I also have solid anti-malware and anti-virus programs, so I wasn't too worried about that). I was then directed to a warning page with some English and some Korean on it--something about the National Police. I presume that the site I visited was one of the blacklisted foreign websites, but that's the first time that's happened to me. Has anyone else had this happen? Korea has some pretty strange laws (imprisonment for adultery?), so I'm wondering if any trouble can come from this.

The GRB Notice (from the National Police Agency & Game Rating Board).

Nothing to worry about too much.

Its a warning, but Korea does not have the man-power to send someone to everyone's apartment each day that that notice pops up - because it pops up on most peoples computers at least once a week.

Porn sites are not illegal, just SOME porn sites (like the one you visited).

I have many sites I download movies from (Hollywood "normal" movies) (using Rapidshare, etc) and that warning has popped up on my screen at least once a week for ages.

It also pops up on peoples screens who try to play banned games (such as online gambling), or computer games considered too violent, etc.

or other peoples screens who try to log into a North Korean News website.

It just means that the site is not "approved" by the government - and you shouldn't use that site again.

Its also to prevent children from accessing sites that are not appropriate.

There's an easy solution to this: Thermite in the Drive Bay, courtesy of Hacking with Ramzi.

Yes, porn is illegal in Korea. But Korea is also the #1 per capita consumer of internet porn in the world. You have nothing to worry about.

Illegal?
I get it on demand from my Qook TV package.
Granted it's terrible, but still...illegal?

Don't worry about that police banner. If you're really worried, you can go through a proxy before you start the tugging.

Truth. I saw that study somewhere too. Korea consumes more porn than any other country. Even more than America and Japan... that should really tell you something about this sexually repressed society.

Also funny, the states in America that download the most porn are the considered the most religiously conservative. The ones that are supposed to be built on "traditional morals and values." Ha. What a joke.

One think I've noticed here (and lets be honest, every male here has looked at porn) there will occasionally be a site that is blocked, not by the Korean government, but by the site owner itself. They black any ip coming from Korea because of the excessive "hacking and abuse" from this country. Hilarious. Koreans are so porn obsessed, some porn sites have actually blocked any computer from this country from viewing their content. Korea, #1, fighting!

When I was TDY to Qatar a few years ago, I was briefed that porn was illegal there as well as in most countries in the Middle East and there were blocks on porn sites offbase there as well as onbase. Yet, most soldiers and civilian workers were able to get around it by using proxies.

I'll tell you this- if porn was indeed illegal, there would be a block on these sites. However, considering how easy it is to access porn in Korea demonstrates how tolerated it is.

Now, don't mistake tolerate with accept.

Touche! I'm sure I overreacted because the page was quite intimidating with its big font sizes and hangeul and stark, complementary color scheme of oranges and blues.

I was less worried that I'd have a squad car show up at my door and more concerned that my ISP would cut me off (I'm on a wired network). As I said, I find many of Korea's laws strange--both in formulation and (even more so) in practice. A proxy is a good solution, but it sounds like I have nothing to worry about at all.

But anyway, thank you all for the helpful replies.

Hey that stuff reminds me of when I was 12 and sneaking downstairs at 3AM to catch some Softcore Cinemax movie. Those were great days.

Actually its more like sneaking at 3AM to watch Real Sex on HBO- get all interested and end up just confused or grossed out.

I remember once when I was a soldier a new member came into our section and we all took him out for some drinks to welcome him into the unit.
On our way back to the barracks, we stopped by a video store and one guy got a membership there. We looked around and we came upon the "porn" section. We grabbed one, paid the 250 won rental fee (yeah, it was that cheap back in the day), then we rushed to the "supa'" and bought several "combat bottles" of Soju (the 1 liter bottles) and several bottles of Samba and headed back to the barracks.
Our first thought was "some authenic Korean hardcore porn" as we popped the cassette into the VCR.
Imagine our disappointment when we saw nothing but people dryhumping naked. We fastforward the tape in the hopes of finding the hardcore parts, but there were none. We forgot about it, turned off the tape and just started drinking. We never returned the tape and just passed it on to the KATUSAs.
You got to admit, the pictures on the cassettes looked pretty misleading.
