I have already looked at some other threads but just wondering if anyone can suggest some good documentaries. I just watched The Secrets of Scientology and For the Bible Tells Me So - a great and very moving documentary about 5 devout Christian families who find out one of their children is gay. Any other suggestions?

Everything David Attenborough has ever done.

Pretty much everything Louis Thereux has ever done.

When We Were Kings. It's a little old(1996), but it won the oscar that year for best documentary.

"It's 1974, Muhammed Ali is 32 and thought by many to be past his prime. George Forman is ten years younger and the Heavyweight champion of the world. Promoter Don King wants to make a name for himself and offers both fighters five million dollars apiece to fight one another, and when they accept, King has only to come up with the money. He finds a backer in Mobutu Sese Suko, the dictator of Zaire and the "Rumble in the Jungle" is set. A musical festival, featuring the America's top black performers, like James Brown and B.B. King, is also planned."

If you've never seen it, I would highly recommend it. Some of you younger guys will found out why Ali was considered larger than life.

The Kid Stays in the Picture - Robert Evans's rise and fall, as told by Evans himself (he produced The Godfather, among many other films).

The Pervert's Guide to Cinema - Slajov Zizek is hard to understand sometimes, but his take on the philosophy of film is fascinating.

Gimme Shelter - About the free concert put on by the Rolling Stones in California, the one where the Hell's Angels started stabbing people.

The Fog of War - McNamara explains his thought behind Vietnam and war in general.

Anything Michael Moore has done. Yeah he's fat and biased but he does his research and is genuinely funny. "Roger and Me" is a time capsule in itself.

Anvil : The Story of Anvil
Formed by two 14-year-olds in the 1970s, heavy metal band Anvil influenced the great acts that followed, such as Anthrax and Metallica. This documentary joins Anvil's now middle-aged founders as they recover from a disastrous tour of Europe. Hoping to end their youthful dreams and careers on a high note, Robb Reiner, Steve "Lips" Kudlow and the band set out to record their 13th album, "This Is Thirteen."

Dark Days
Documentarian Marc Singer trains his camera on a group of homeless people who live deep underground in an abandoned New York City railroad tunnel and scavenge for food on the mean streets of Manhattan. At night, they retreat to the tunnel, where they've built huts out of scrap metal, plastic and plywood. Amazingly, they have electricity, furniture, working kitchens -- and a sense of community that many surface dwellers would envy.

Food Inc.
Why animals are sick with E coli and how a few companies control our food supply. Interesting stuff!!
A women's son died of E. coli from eating a contaminated hamburger and she's campaigning to make food safer.
Also how Monsanto banned seed saving and the lengths they'll go to find people who still do.

I've heard Earthlings is really good, narrated by Joaquin Phoenix but haven't seen it yet

iraq for sale - about the companies that cashed in on gulf war 2.

edge the movie - about straight edge's origins and history.

manufactured landscapes - explores human interaction with nature through industrial pollution.

planet earth - not actually a film, but this series is the only tv show i've ever bought on dvd. truly stunning cinematography of animals from all over the world. beautiful and informative.

VPRO does good work:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VPRO

Here's three that I'd recommend:

Quants: The Alchemists of Wall Street (Marije Meerman, VPRO Backlight 2010)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ed2FWNWwE3I

Quants is a great overview of the new capitalism. Markets do not force price discovery and/or value firms. They're moved by algos.

Time for Change (Bregtje van der Haak, VPRO Backlight 2010)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqpVe9kNbhg

(portions of Time for Change focus on the use of alternative forms of money as a tool of development - very interesting imo)

The Israel Lobby (Marije Meerman, VPRO Backlight 2007)

Man On Wire: about a french guy and his crew who were able to secretly pull off a tightrope walk between the tops of the WTC Twin Towers back in the 70's. Amazing, amazing movie.

It Might Get Loud: Jack White, Jimmy Page and The Edge sit around and talk about guitars, rock, music in general. Pretty cool stuff.

This is on my 'to see list'.

Spoiler

There is some debate as to which parts of the movie are real or scripted. I read somewhere that the whole thing is a mockumentary directed by Banksy.
