I thought I was doing well going armed with pen and paper and a ball park figure from the internet.

I was specifically looking at Canon Eos 450D or Canon Eos 1000D.

Then all of a sudden I was hit with xsi and xs and x and kiss x and kiss x2 and prices were all over the board.

Once back home I learned that the Kiss x is not even the canon 1000D but the 400D and its the japanese label.

My question is does it really make a difference if you buy the american, korean or japanese label of the 450D?

I went to Ipark and the Jeonja Land place.

Has anyone bought the 450 or 1000 lately? What price did you get for the kit?

I'm going back sunday to make a purchase. Wish me luck.

There is an American model number and a rest of the world model number. Makes no difference. Check the price on danawa

or gmart

Model number version shouldn't matter as long as your getting a warranty. Checking prices is good. (Strange that they had the American model names there.) If your not getting a Korean warranty expect to pay less.

Both of those models are pretty solid, and should be available everywhere.

We have the canon digital kiss x(400D), or whatever it's called. We bought with the std kit and found out later that the kit lens is pretty crappy according to reviews, so I recommend that you do a search on whatever cameras you are interested in and read the reviews. Maybe think about getting a much better len for maybe $50-$150 dollars more. Regardless, we are pleased with the camera and even a camera-challenged person like me is able to take decent pics with it.

Good comparison page...

Guess it depends on how much cheaper the 400d is compared to the 450 these days.

I think I will go with the Kiss but now I am eyeing that Nikon D40 after the ken rockwell review I read.

I checked the prices on danwa and they list it as canon 450d.

how much can i expect off the price for the japanese no warranty kiss x2?

you should still get a warranty with the Kiss models, it will just be a Korean warranty that the seller will honor.

as someone else said, dont get the kit lense, its not so good and limited with what you can do.

good detailed reviews and comparisons are here. including lenses.

might make yo uthink twice about the D40, unless money is an issue.

I'm considering selling my eos 450d, its still got about 1 1/2 years korean warranty on it...

p.s. the 450 kit lense got much better reviews than the 400 kit lense.

I would be interested in knowing if anyone can recommend a similar priced camera to the 450d/kiss x2/rebel xsi. Or is that really the best one to buy?

I agree, unless you are on a budget I would get something other than a Nikon 40d.

The two Canon models you listed at first are really decent. Nikon offers some great advanced amateur camera's; but I don't think the D40 holds to the other budget/entry level DSLR's feature wise. I think the Olympus e-420 or e-520 are the best budget camera's with decent kit lenses.

Also the canon 1000d is another great budget choice. But the Nikon D40 is just an alright camera IMHO. All major camera companies can make good lenses.

But then again, the D40 is a perfectly good camera to get the job done. And I have a few friends who enjoy it. IMO, you can't really make a bad choice. All major companies are quality for the most part.

Reviews are good to get an understanding of the camera; but sometimes take all the tech stuff with a grain of salt. All the cameras you are considering, when paired with the right lens, would be able to make a poster bigger than what you would want in your living room. Smile

Many of the photographers who belong to this Flickr group use a D40 with manual, non-metering lenses. There's some amazing glass to be had out there! And sometimes quite cheaply. You do, however, need to know what you're doing. There's no auto/Av/Tv options. It's completely manual.

I guess as a beginner I should focus on the canon xsi then. I went back to yongsan today and priced the lowest price for the kit was at 700,000won. I will go to namdaemun this week and price it there. Hopefully I can get a better deal.

So much choices and options, it makes your head hurt.
I decided to by the the next package we seen on a shopping channel.
So last night we bought the Olympus E-420 with 2 lenses, tripod, etc. for 630,000 payable over 10 months.
Done some research online while my wife ordered, looks to be a decent buy for what it'll be used for.

The more reviews I read the more I think I should buy the body of hte x2 and a better lens.

the lenses are so expensive though! I think I need to find a jack of all trades lens by a non canon company.
