Howdy Folks,

I did a search for rowing on the forums so I wouldn't do a repost but there doesn't seem to be a discussion on this.

I did crew in college, and I was wondering if there are opportunities in Seoul to row?

I know there is a boathouse there but it looks like it is an Olympic facility.

Definite bump. Never did crew, but that was because of a lack opportunity, not a lack of trying. I canoed and kayaked my whole life and would really like to try my hand at it.

I haven't seen any but you may be lucky.

The thing that really surprises me is that I have never been to a gym that even has rowing machines, or even heard of a gym that has them. It's weird.

I used to actually have a rowing machine back home. I used to do my rowing while watching the news. Exercise completed and up to date on world events. It was perfect

I believe crew is an elusive beast. It's definately there, but it's very hard for us foriegners to find. I found a few websites, but they're in Korean. whats the worst is that I know my school (Korea University) has a rowing team because I walked past a guy with a rowing team jacket, but I can't for the life of me find where they meet and practice. It makes me depressed! I need my Crew!!!

I am a really big dude, who's in decent shape. 6'6" 230ish. I'd love to get back on the water.

Well it definitely sounds like there is interest here. I would love to get back in shape for it!

Perhaps when I arrive at Seoul, we could get together and maybe make something happen in the crew department.

A new gym in Yangsan (smaaallll city outside of Pusan) actually has a few ERGs. However, I have never seen any gym memebers, nor even the trainors, use it properly -- all arms, terrible form etc. I did once see a man rowing a single scull somewhere in Korea, but that's it.

I was hoping to row somwhere out of Pusan, but never found any or anyone to join. Anyway, my point is the tools to train and row are in this country somewhere, it's just going to take a fair amount of effort to actually find yourself on the water.

A guy I knew a few years ago was heavily into rowing and had one of those Concept2 rowing machines. I talked to him about it and you can buy new and used ones in Korea. There is a small group of people in the Seoul area heavily into rowing and even have Concept2 competitions where the units are linked.

There are one or two outlets for them in Seoul, I bet if you went to one and talked to people, you could a group that's into the sport. Not lots of them mind you, but they are around.

Concept2 is nice to have but 1. it's expensive 2. too big for your apartment and 3. it's boring to use for requisite periods owing to sensory deprivation...you ain't going nowhere. I wouldn't risk the purchase. Also difficult to get rid of since Koreans are not overkeen on them.

There is a fair amount of both skulling and kayaking in Korea, but limited to universities. They get free equipment and their gyms are chokka with Concept2's. They don't pay but have to commit to training. The standard is not bad. I've seen a meet in Ulsan extending over a one month period and as I say I was impressed. The skulling and kayaking regattas take place together on adjoining pieces of the river.

During the month I was all over them like a rash and they showed not the slightest reciprocal interest. I could see technique probs with some of the paddlers and I couldn't help 'sticking my oar in' but the coaches weren't in the least interested and actually evinced mild hostility as I saw it. I think they didn't like both foreigners and English, or some combination thereof.

There's no way of hanging about them and thinking they'll adopt you like some kind of novelty as we in South Africa would do in similar circumstances. They are completely self-contained.

Incidentally, if you are a paddler and you can get hold of a Concept2, there is manner of using it effectively specific for kayaks.

You sit side-saddle and pull with one arm only. At full stretch arch or look upward.

Better than nothing.

I did a bit last year and they were really nice about things. Pm me if you want to do any hardcore erging. I'm a beginner in rowing but really falling in love with the erg.

Are there any rowing machines for use in Seoul? I'm south of the river near Gangnam and Sadang. I'd love to start doing this.
