Greg Mortenson, best-selling author, philanthropist, mountaineer and favourite of President Barack Obama is fighting off another title: fraudster. The influential author of Three Cups of Tea has become the latest bestselling memoir writer to be accused of passing off fiction as fact.

The guy built a bunch of schools in Afghanistan, mostly for female students. Wrote a book about it, hit the lecture circuit, got a few gigs lecturing at US military academies, saying all the right things about female empowerment etc.
Now 60 Minutes says he's a fraud, or at least that significant portions of his memoirs are. And he hasn't built half the schools he claims to have built. And he spends his charity's money like a drunken sailor.

| SAD SAD Sad!!! Maybe the publicity around this will cause people to do something to help those schools. Some good could come out of this. |

I'm not finding Mortenson's defense all that credible.
| Quote: |
Mortenson's written response continued:
It is important to know that Balti people have a completely different notion about time. Even the Balti language -- an archaic dialect of Tibetan -- has only a vague concept of tenses and time. For example, "now" can mean immediately or sometime over the course of a whole long season. The concept of past and future is rarely of concern. Often tenses are left out of discussion, although everyone knows what is implied. And if a person is a day or a week late or early it doesn't matter. The Balti consider the western notion of time quite amusing.
|
I'm always a little skeptical when someone chimes up with "People in that culture find our western notions of [whatever is being discussed] quite amusing". It usually sets these sorts of alarm bells off in my head.
And really. Do concepts of time really vary THAT much between cultures? I would imagine that, even in cultures where it's more acceptable to show up late, people would still know the difference between "He said Tuesday, but came on Wednesday", and "He said Tuesday, and came on Tuesday".

Judge not, lest you also be judged (or something along those lines):

(^wow - I'm not sure if I've seen the light but there's a helluva lot going on over there.

In the interests of not being labeled a vomit-inducing racist I'll go along with the Black-inspired Greek philosophy FACT, but I have to say that the BlackJesus site I just stumbled across is a veritable goldmine/bottomless pit of thread-worthy material.
I'm not gonna touch it, I'm just saying.
Big Edit: Wait a minute, Fox. "The Blacks love me." - didn't Donald Trump just catch a rash of shit for saying that?
We say "African-Americans", even if neither you or the people in question are American, am I right?
If this is some kind of a trick well then you'll have to wake up more early in the middle of the night to fool old caniff. |

For what it's worth, a while back some anthropologists and tech-geeks did a visual reconstruction based on a semitic skull found near Jerusalem, dating from around the first century. This is what they came up with.
Not quite black as we understand the idea. But then, not exactly the Nordic Avenger either.

| In other words he looked pretty much the same as most modern inhabitants of the region that didn't descend from Ashkenazi heritage? |
