He can be, he isn't trying to appeal to everyone and definitely forces you to choose a side. What can you say, he's an opinionated New Yorker, not an LA smoozer. At least he's not toeing the corporate line, and basically tells you what's on his mind. |

I found that the more grating aspects of his personality were smoothed over quite a bit when I read his books. |

Maybe it's 'cos I lived in Tokyo and had to ride the subway everyday (as well as work closely with clueless co-teachers in high school) that I don't find him grating at all. Might also have to do with being somewhat familiar with his references to certain bands and chemicals. |

See I find him a bit annoying for that exact reason. A lot of his bad-boy image comes off as manufactured and as part of his publicity machine.
I couldn't get past three minutes of that video because he kept repeating the same cliche line. "I know (x place) better than my own city, New York City!!!"
Even though I did appreciate the Richard Hell song in the intro. Still...not enough to keep me watching. |

It's more that his bad boy image is very, very real, and not at all a creation of his publicity machine. If anything, they severely downplay just how much of a bad boy he can be. He became what he has become by virtue of writing a book that he didn't think anyone would buy, only to see it vaunt him to stardom. Since then he's been an unabashed sellout, and will be the first to admit it. The badboy stuff isn't a persona, it's Bourdain being Bourdain. |

True that. The guy used to be a huge druggie.
Although I'm biased as a huge fan of Bourdain. |

And I realize I'm probably unduly biased against him, haha. Some people just rub you the wrong way I guess.
I did watch the entirety of his Korea episode, though. I felt kind of sorry for him - he was really grasping for straws when trying to praise the food. |

Yeah, Korea wasn't so sparkling in that one, something I guess they're trying to remedy with some program that's coiming out later this summer called "The Kimchee Chronicles" (watching the preview didn't really do too much for me).
Korea may be too locked into a "bbali, bbali" mentality to allow good ideas to germinate and develop. In the episode below from the 6 minute mark is everything I miss about Japan, and where I feel Japan is stronger than Korea, regardless of how much better Korea does economically and marketing its Hallyu abroad. From 9:50 is where Bourdain's show for me leaves his competition in the dust.

The funny thing is, he actually really enjoyed Korea, at least that's the impression he gives if you read his travel writing on the subject (something you can't say about the Scandinavian countries that he's sworn off for any future shows). That said, it seemed to be the societally acceptable alcoholism that he enjoyed the most, something that could take the edge off of any week long trip to Korea. |
