Many of you have been to Beijing. Do you reckon it's more expensive to live there than Seoul? For the same money and benefits, does either one have any advantages?

Beijing is cheaper than Seoul, but you'll earn a lot less as a teacher. It's also more polluted and chaotic, but it has it's charm. However, I would pick Seoul probably even if I got paid the same in both places.

China is the future. Korea is just a footnote.

I'd choose Beijing if I could save the same as in Seoul (and I do think that will be a reality soon - it already is in Shanghai).

Yes, it's polluted. But I loved the food, Tsingtao is an OK beer, the people seemed friendly overall, lot's of underground culture. I check the job listings over there often.

Shanghai is very different from Beijing. Beijing is a bit more laid back, they like to be more cultured and are about arts and all that. It's like LA vs. NY. Shanghai is busy busy busy, they're a lot more arrogant and uptight and it's a lot of business and production going on. Rapid expansion.

Why do people say this? 15,000 RMB isn't much less than most folks make in the ROK.

How many people are making 15,000 in Beijing? I'm intending to move to Beijing when my contract finishes. The majority of job ads I've found are offering somewhere between between 6,000 and 12,000.

Thanks for the input. Do you have any comments regarding costs in Seoul vs. Beijing though?

I can't think of much that would not be cheaper in Beijing than Seoul. Restaurants, drinking, transportation, clothes, utilities, rents-what else?-but that's common sense really. Probably why people didn't answer that question.

Yep!

I wouldn't do beijing unless I was studying chinese or making some serious cash.

Beijing's cheaper, but not as much as you think. Also, expect to get a car or taxi around alot. That city is wide even by American standards.

Seoul has a better nightlife, if you are concerned about that type of thing.
