|

Will my mobile phone that I'm using now in Oman work in Korea? It takes a sim card and time is credited by phone cards. Whats the process of getting a Korean sim card? Can I just buy one or is paperwork necessary? Is it possible to pre-pay as you go by phone cards or must I have a service and plan and bills? |

I don't believe they are on the same systems. If you want to live cheaply, you can get a used phone and a prepaid card. |

GSM will not work in Korea. Korea uses CDMA. You can buy a secondhand crappy card (payt) phone for as little as 60k with a load of credit on it. Dont bother with a GSM phone here it simply wont work they work in most countries but wont work here. |

Ah, Keithinkorea, since you mention GSM, which my phone indeed is, maybe you can tell me what GSM stands for. I've never been able to get a sure answer out of anyone, british or omani. Also STD in India is another confusing acronym. |

GSM=Global System for Mobile Communications
STD= ? (yeah I know the obvious one here, thanks anyway) Perhaps "Standard" or "Single-Trial Decoding"?? |

I think GSM is more widespread than CDMA.. And the nice thing of the GSM phones is that you can very easily switch operator using the same phone.. just get a new SIM card, pop it in and finished. With CDMA you need to get a new phone if you want to change operator. |
