ovens
Many jobs I've applied for seem to offer a studio apartment with a hot plate or stove. I enjoy cooking and baking. I'm beginning to think that it is unrealistic to expect an oven in my apartment. How much does it cost to buy one? Are they easy to find? Are apartments only equipped with one burner to cook on?
studios
I am from North America. Is a studio in Korea like a studio there-- one multi-purpose room with an attached bathroom and separate tiny kitchen? Or is it just one room and a hot plate?

Yes, it would be rare.

That would depend on the location Some kitchens are separate, but most would be right there in the room.

Depending on what you want to bake, there may be alternatives to an oven, i.e. bread maker, toaster oven, etc.

we got a countertop oven (much bigger than a toaster oven) for 120,000 won in Dec 2002, best thing we ever bought for our apt.

You can look in Yongsan or techno mart. We got ours at Kumho World in Gwangju

rudyflyer might be talking about a convection oven.

I bought a western style stove last fall (4 burners, oven and broiler) for W200,000 at Hi Mart. Now I'm a two oven family of one. Cool (My convection oven is also a microwave oven, but I only count it as one.)

You can also check out Wal Mart.

Thats really high. 200,000-400,000 is more realistic for most.

That's an import. Korean ovens are a lot cheaper.

http://search.samsungmall.co.kr/dqdiver/searchList.asp

There are 2 for less than 400,000 on that page. Probably more on the other pages.

edit:

For whatever the reason the above link isn't working.

This link to one of the ovens should:

I see that there are some less expensive ovens, but I don't think 400,000 is the top price.

More fuel on the fire for cheap ovens...

We bought a gas convection oven (four burners) with a large grill (plus free cookery book and oven glove Very Happy ) for the grand total of W300,000 including delivery and installation. Can't tell you where from but it was online and a Korean friend of ours knew the site. If you are desperate then I can ask her at work tomorrow.

It is a good buy and cooks banana bread a treat.

Traditionally Koreans don't bake. Or tumble dry, but that's another thread. You're lucky if your basic apartment provides a shower stall. A tub, you ask? Oh, aren't you the Queen of England expecting a tub. In Korea. In an apartment.

On the plus side a washing machine is fairly common. Lots of basic apartments in North America don't have a washing machine in the suite. But like I said above, you've got no chance of having a traditional tumble dryer. They're not a tumble drying people.

I bought a toaster oven. It's not as good as a standard convection oven but you'd be surprised what you learn to cook with a toaster oven: pizza, bread, cookies, panzerotti, cinnamon buns, etc. The trick tends to be rotating the tray a lot and covering the dish with tin foil so there's a more even distribution of the heat.

Another trick is to learn to cook Korea dishes. That trick I'll learn soon. Maybe. I did try to make some triangle kimbap.
