I am quiting my current job. I gave them notice and I am in the process of returning home, so I don't need a letter of release. But I would like to return sometime in the fall. My ARC card expires in November.

Do I have to wait until after my ARC card expires? Or can I come back sooner since it would be a new visa?

When you leave, be sure to turn in your ARC at the airport and cancel your visa.

You should also ask for a letter of release or some kind of letter showing that you left on good terms if possible.

I am not leaving on good terms and will not be receiving a letter of release. So when can I return? Before or after my ARC card expires?

Hand in your ARC at the airport to Immigration. Tell them you are leaving. They will cancel the card. Then you can return whenever you are ready.

A LOR is only required if you are changing jobs within the country.

So you say to the customs people, "Oh no, I don't want that ARC card back. I quit my job." And they say "Oh OK, have a nice flight!"?

Is there any chance you get a self-righteous adjosshi at the customs desk who decides you can't just walk away from a job like that? Can they delay you and make you miss your flight?

You can return when you learn how to properly spell quitting.

You should tell us where you worked so that people looking for jobs won't be sucked into an ASAP position on the job postings

You have the right to leave the country. You are not a prisoner. The only thing they can hold you for is if you have commited some crime or Immigration violation. Apart from that you simply tell them that you are leaving the country. No one is going to make more work for himself and possibly get in trouble with his superiors if he can possibly avoid it. Just like everywhere else.
