I used to live in wontong and there are tons of great hikes in seoraksan...
map of the park with distances/estimated times

the main entrance near sokcho and the cable car will give you a good view. on a clear day you can see the ocean from the peak (i think, cant remember).
a tough one day route or a two day if you stay in one of the shelters is to go over from the main entrance to osaek. it's a LONG day if you do it in just one. In osaek there's a huge hotel near the ranger station and they have one of the most amazing saunas ever (great for post hike rinse/wash).
another good one day route is to go from namgyori to jangsudae. it's a decently long day, but an absolutely stunning waterfall on the namgyori side of the ridge makes up for it. The other waterfall on the jangsudae side is taller, but not as pretty. only downside is to get there you have to go to wontong and take a local bus.
the stuff around baekdamsa is mostly flat and easier and then there's plenty of beautiful scenery. The temple itself is also pretty cool to see.
In general stay away from hangyeryeong. you have to hike onto the ridge by basically climbing stairs for 2 hours straight up. it's brutal. |

Hey RGV, thats great information. I want to go to the park this weekend!
Can you tell me how can i book a shelter to sleep in? or do i even have to book? I will be coming from Sokchu and would love to do the long hike all the way through to Osaek....but i need to know, is there a local bus from Osaek back to Sokchu on the monday morning?
I dont want to be stuck there with no way of getting back.
Thanks in advance |
